Why Twitter Matters: Tomorrow’s Knowledge Network

Why Twitter Matters: Tomorrow’s Knowledge Network | Workplace Digital Literacy | Scoop.it

Great pick by Jan Gordon and a vribrant defense of Twitter as way to do research, mutual curation and smart... cocktail parties!

Nigel Cameron says in this post he doesn't like "the thought of “one great inter-connected world brain,” language proposed by the editors of a National Science Foundation volume a decade back." But reading him (and as he also admits), I couldn't help but think about this previous post on how curation might be shaping the global brain.

Thanks Jan!

Google forms is a very useful (and free) way of gathering information via a survey style tool. This 'how to' page gives instructions for adding images and videos to a Google form. Although I've used Google forms for a while now, this is not something I've ever thought of doing. Thanks to @tracey morgan for noting the added possibilities.

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns | Workplace Digital Literacy | Scoop.it

The children and media research community has been buzzing with frustration at the viral circulation of Cris Rowan's Huffington Post column, "10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12." The piece pretty well defines "hack-ademic" writing, in which an author throws lots of learned-sounding terms and citations at a lay reader, while obscuring misinterpretations and fuzzy logic. Here are 10 reasons why Rowan's column is flawed.

Chunks, bits and short modules make learning more manageable and easier to integrate into long-term memory. Long classroom or web-based training courses may accomplish the function of training, but rarely achieve desired retention rates. Instead of just dumping information on the learner, employees are expecting the content to be easy to find, relevant and digestible in the way their brains process information.
