Stop Apologizing for Wanting Work/Life Balance

Stop Apologizing for Wanting Work/Life Balance | WorkLife | Scoop.it

at aOn March 1, 2013, I got on a one-way flight to Kathmandu. Over the next few weeks, I crossed the Himalayas at 18,000 feet, got bathed by an elephant, checked Bhutan off my bucket list and learned to ride a scooter in Laos. I’ve traveled to more than 30 countries in the past 10 years alone, often escaping to some really remote places. I’ve also seen my share of 18-hour workdays.

Great article on how to design the work and life that really suits you.

5 Steps for Being Present

5 Steps for Being Present | WorkLife | Scoop.it

So, how do we stay present? The first thing to recognize is that, try as we might, we really can only do one thing at a time, so we ought to do that thing wholeheartedly. Most of our time is spent in the past or the future, rather than the present moment. What we end up doing is passing through that moment on the way to somewhere else and, in doing so, we miss the moment. That's how life ends up passing us by - we do it to ourselves.

20 Tools for Coaching and Teaching

20 Tools for Coaching and Teaching | WorkLife | Scoop.it
As an Instructor and Leadership Coach at the Stanford Graduate School of Business for the last seven (!) years, I've worked with hundreds of MBAs, and the books, articles and other resources below have been important tools in my efforts to help students develop their leadership and interpersonal skills (and in my private coaching practice as well.)

While I make use of these resources in my work at Stanford and my practice, almost all of them can be applied by a leader or manager within their organizations or by any individual seeking to self-coach.

WHAT IS ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP?

WHAT IS ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP? | WorkLife | Scoop.it

Adaptive leadership is given to impacting the environment. It addresses a very active form of leadership, not a passive effort taken merely to adjust to circumstances as found. Biology teaches that relationships between living entities are circular and interactive. Our organizations are also living systems, being composed not just of capital goods and technology, but of people.

Mindfulness and Leadership: Opening up to Possibilities - Integral Leadership Review

Mindfulness and Leadership: Opening up to Possibilities - Integral Leadership Review | WorkLife | Scoop.it

The concept of leadership we describe is ordinarily mostly hidden from view by the dominance of conventional assumptions, such as that leaders and only leaders exercise leadership. In recognizing and lifting aside these assumptions—without necessarily rejecting them altogether—we may be able to catch glimpses of this different form. Mindfulness is in good measure about noticing and contemplating possibilities.

Is Your Employee Coachable?

As a manager, you provide some level of coaching to all your direct reports, helping some attain higher levels of professional achievement, and helping others improve their performance to fulfill their current roles. But while every manager should have the capability to coach, you also need to have the ability to discern when coaching isn’t working.

Three Differences Between Managers and Leaders

A young manager accosted me the other day. “I’ve been reading all about leadership, have implemented several ideas, and think I’m doing a good job at leading my team. How will I know when I’ve crossed over from being a manager to a leader?” he wanted to know. I didn’t have a ready answer and it’s a complicated issue, so we decided to talk the next day.

Why Emotions Matter In Today's Leadership

Learn what the latest neuroscience studies reveal about the importance of emotions to successful leadership in today's organizations.

donhornsby's curator insight, February 18, 4:50 PM

Our emotions not only influence what our brain focuses on, but it can also completely change how we remember details. This is an important key for all leaders to be mindful in their roles.

(From the article): Ultimately, what this comes down to and what the various studies from the neuroscience field help us to better appreciate is that our leadership is not defined by us, but through the memories and experiences of those we lead.

And this brings us back to the fundamental truth of succeeding at leadership today – that it’s not about serving our own wants and needs, but about how we can help those under our care to attain that level of success and fulfillment that fuels their drive to do better and to be better going forward.

Amy Melendez's curator insight, February 19, 12:28 AM

From the article:

These findings also cement the truth of why the command-and-control style of leadership is no longer effective given how we can’t lean on our positional authority to assume our perspective and memories are correct [Share on Twitter].

When to Bring in a Professional Coach

As a manager, you’ll inevitably need to spend time actively coaching employees. Perhaps you have a hard-working employee who needs to build certain skills to be more effective on the job. Or maybe you’ve recently promoted a high performer, and you want to ensure that you’ve made the right decision by giving her an opportunity to build new skills. In situations like this, you may find that you’re able to be a very effective coach for your direct report. But in the 15 years I’ve spent on coaching and employee development initiatives, I’ve found that there are certain scenarios when it simply makes sense to call in a professional.

8 Ways to Handle a Narcissist

8 Ways to Handle a Narcissist | WorkLife | Scoop.it

A tendency toward narcissism is present in everyone, to more or less of a degree. Sometimes you don’t know if someone’s particularly high in this personality quality until you’ve gotten deeply involved in a relationship and come to realize that the very qualities that attracted you to a person are the narcissistic qualities that now annoy you. You may have a sibling, parent, or other relative whose narcissistic personality traits you’re forced to confront but can’t control or challenge. Or you may be forced to work with a boss, co-worker, teacher, student, or employee with strongly narcissistic tendencies. Just because some people are narcissists doesn’t mean they’re unlovable.
