John Michel's curator insight, November 25, 2013 11:08 PM

So many people talk about themselves on social media. You’ll stand out if you get off the soapbox and instead offer helpful, valuable information, giving props to whoever created it.

David Hain's curator insight, November 26, 2013 12:12 AM

As someone who attempts to do just this - connecting people and ideas - I was delighted to know I may still be in demand, even if I don't want another job!

MIT Researchers: Code in natural language, like writing emails. | Working With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it

Researchers at MIT have proved that it is possible to write computer programs using everyday language rather than specialized programming languages. To vastly oversimplify the idea: you will be able tell the computer what to do, and it will do it, like any good robot employee.

As venture capitalist Marc Andreesen says: “The spread of computers and the Internet will put jobs in two categories: People who tell computers what to do, and people who are told by computers what to do.”

The myth of the brainstorming session: The best ideas don’t always come from meetings

The myth of the brainstorming session: The best ideas don’t always come from meetings | Working With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it

From my experience working at an agency, as a designer, and at ooomf, coming up with ideas from a single brainstorming session like this one is usually not the most effective way. Many people I’ve come across, including the most creative ones, need individual time to let ideas marinate before the best concept reveals itself (even if it’s something that seems as simple as naming a website).

Beep it and weep: a full 47 percent of jobs in America are in danger of being "computerized."

What does that mean? Of the 702 (!) occupation types that Oxford researchers Carl Frey and Michael Osborne surveyed, nearly half of them are at risk of being fully automated. Instead of being done by human hands, these gigs could go to the machines.

What I’ve learned about creating meaningful work

What I’ve learned about creating meaningful work | Working With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it

Self-employment is the ultimate life experiment, complete with an uncountable number of variables that come with large amounts of fear and challenges. But for those of us who do it, we don’t know any other way. We aren’t content with the status quo and feel the need to hack it. To innovate. To make something new.

I’ve been on this path for over 16 years, mostly writing and making websites, but I’ve also started a handful of other ventures that have absolutely flopped. I’ve also started businesses that did well but I ended up closing them down— it’s surprising how easy it is to build a business you hate, and then it’s nobody’s fault but your own.

Connected Learning in the Workplace: the next generation of learning practices

Connected Learning in the Workplace: the next generation of learning practices | Working With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it

“Today’s enterprises are seeing and experiencing the value of both social software and cloud-based content collaboration systems. By connecting people and giving them the means to discuss, unlock and increase knowledge sharing across the workforce, these services are driving productivity and increasing efficiency in organizations across the globe.”

As a result, employees are learning very differently in this new connected workplace; they are learning continuously, autonomouslyand socially - as they carry out their daily work. And in consequence, this now means that we need a new generation of “organised” learning practices, ones that are closer to the ways that people are now working and learning in their jobs.
