Russia is among the four most challenging countries for expats, along with Saudi Arabia, India and Qatar – but is also among the top five countries for expat incomes, along with Switzerland, Egypt, Singapore and again Saudi Arabia. These latest findings by The Expat Explorer Survey come as the Federal Migration Service reports a greater number of foreign professionals coming to Russia every year, and a 40 percent increase in 2011 alone.

Is it the end of the era of Western expatriate managers?

A recent article in the McKinsey Quarterly by Manpower CEO, Jeffrey A Joerres, argued that the era of the Western expatriate manager is ending. 

Reasons given included the “notoriously bad” cultural adaptation of Western expatriates, the career limitations placed on locals by having expats in senior positions, and a costly dearth of intimate local knowledge.  All are valid reasons.  And all things that nobody in the global mobility industry wants to see.

Around the HR world in 40 days: HR Challenges in Emerging Markets - Cornell Working Group Paper

On February 5 th , 2013, CARS Managing Director Steve Miranda facilitated a day ‐ long Working Group (WG) on the Human Capital Challenges for Emerging Markets (EMs). The session focused on challenges unique to Asian EMs and how companies are dealing with these issues. The WG was held in the Singapore office of American Express and atended by 23 individuals from 17 CAHRS partner and guest companies. These included Abbo  Labs, Alcatel ‐ Lucent, American Express, Caterpillar, Chevron, Cigna, Cisco, Corning, DBS Bank, DuPont, Ericsson, Hewlett  Packard, Inger ‐ soll Rand, Lubrizol, Merck, Procter & Gamble, and Singtel.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the term ‘IQ’, or intelligence quotient, became popular and led to a rapid spread of different standardised tests that assessed general mental ability. Later, by the end of 20th century, Daniel Goleman popularised the term ‘EQ’, or emotional intelligence, which describes interpersonal skills. Nowadays, we also speak about a third main type of intelligence quotient, namely ‘CQ’ or cultural intelligence, which focuses on cross-cultural skills.
