Great Negotiators

What is the role of “management” in a worker co-operative?
In some, it seems that they take over, effectively adopting the role of Agency in the organization and turn the membership, the workers, into passive actors in their own enterprise.

Cooperantics's comment, December 7, 2011 5:24 AM
I think that all co-op members need to be negotiators - in the sense that there are always conflicting issues and it's helpful to follow the four steps outlined in Fisher and Ury's excellent Getting to Yes: Separate the people from the problem; focus on interests not positions; invent options for mutual gain and use independent objective criteria. However it's also useful to remember that there are different places in the structure where decisions get taken - I can take the autonomous decisions contained in my job description, some decisions would be the remit of the weekly team meeting, others will be for members to decide in a general meeting and some will be for all members or a significnat majority of members to decide in the AGM. There are also a variety of decision making styles, command, deleegation, democracy & consensus - all have their pros and cons and will be useful in different situations.
