This article featured on the website Bankrate.com is about the pros and cons of  union jobs. The article gives a list of advantages of joining a union. These advantages include better wages, according to the article the median wage for union workers were $200.00 more than non union workers. The article states that job security is another advantage for union workers, for the fact that most non union workers can be fired for no reason. More access to benefits is another pro for union membership. The article also list what they feel are the cons of union membership. The cons of union membership as stated in the article are loss of autonomy and a less collaborative work environment. The article concludes that there are more pros than con when it comes to union membership

The image above is a chart compiled by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The chart displays the hourly rates of union and non union workers. The chart displays all major occupational groups. These groups represent a variety of jobs from maids to CEO's. According to the chart union workers are paid more than non union workers in every occupational group except for management professionals. The biggest gap in income comes in the natural resource, construction, and maintenance group. The smallest gap comes is in the sales and office group.

As the AFL-CIO wraps up its convention, union membership continues its long decline and blue collar workers struggle with eroding living standards and high rates of unemployment. Facing such dire trouble, the labor movement is seeking to attract members and partners who don't belong to unions.

This podcast appeared on NPR. It is an interview between Sonari Glinton and union representative Tefere Gebre. The purpose of this interview is to give insight on how the union plans to deal with a continual decline in membership. Gebre explains that they plan on becoming more diverse and opening there doors to everyone. They plan on getting rid of the stigma that the union is an exclusive club. They are reaching out to more industries other than the skilled industries such as carpenters and welders that they are known for. by reaching out to unskilled industries such as cab drivers and maids will give the unions a broader base and more members.

 The Essay featured in the book is about the plight of the average American. In the essay he explains how globalization has caused the decline in the average Americans economic stature. He explains how traditional production jobs started to decline.These jobs were once a way for young men and women to make a decent living without a college degree. When these jobs began to decrease these workers were left to find low paying jobs. Without a college degree these workers are stuck in jobs with no future of upward mobility. Since there is no way for the workers to move up in the workforce they are unable to join the middle class. The essay reinforces the idea that unions are good for the American worker.

This Video is a about the future of labor unions. The video is an interview with Labor Secretary Thomas Perez. In the interview Thomas explains that he is optimistic about the future of labor unions even though union membership is in a steady decline. Unions are vital to the country if we are going to revitalize the middle class. In order for the unions to survive they have to look toward the future and not be more open to new ideas. The unions must also become more inclusive and not like the unions of old. In the past the unions had a us against them mentality. This mentality is no longer viable in today's labor environment. The video reinforces the view that unions are a vital part of the American environment.

In 2012, the union membership rate—the percentage of wage and salary workers who were members of a union—was 11.3 percent, down from 11.8 percent in 2011. The number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions, at 14.4 million, also declined over the year.

The image above shows the percentage of union membership by industry. The chart shows that union membership declined slightly from the prior year. Even though there was a decline in membership the most important fact to note is that the industries with the most union membership involve blue collar jobs. That is imperative for the fact that blue collar workers are the most vunerable in todays job market and need the bargaining power and job security that unions offer.

The article above describes how the membership of unions are on a steady decline, but the majority of Americans still have a favorable opinion of them. The research was conducted by the Pew Research Center. The PRC is a non partisan research center. The article gives an example of a recent decision by employees at a Volkswagon factory in Tennesee not to join the United Auto Workers Union to show the problem that the unions have been facing. Even though unions are having a dificult time expanding its membership the article points out that Americans still support unions as a whole.The article also points out that the south which has always had a less favorable view of unions than the rest of the nation, the research still shows that 59 percent of southerners still view unions as neccessary.

The mission of this organization is to inform individuals to help them find economic opportunities. The article gives a list of facts and charts that give the advantages of unions. One of the facts given by the article is that unions raise wages for workers by around 20 percent. Along with facts given the article also the history of the good things unions have done for workers over time.

The nation's labor unions saw another steep decline in membership last year, even as the economy showed signs of recovery and job losses slowed, according to new government figures released late last week.

This article that was featured in The Washington Times describes the decline that labor unions experienced in the year of 2010. The article shows that the number of union members declined from 12.3 percent in 2009 to 11.9 percent in 2010. The article gives insight from Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of labor education research at Cornell University on how can come back from this decline if the economy continues to add jobs in areas that union membership is strong. Some of these industries include transportation and the service industry. She feels that unions should spend more money on attracting new members instead of fighting those who oppose the unions. The article also list facts from The Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report shows New York had the highest union membership. Union membership was highest among people age 55 to 64 years old. The report also shows that black workers are more likely to join a union.
