Ever since WP 3.5 XML-RPC is enabled by default and if you want to turn it off there is a handy FREE plugin to do this. If you do not use this feature (such as with the WP mobile app or LiveWriter or IFTTT) then disabling it is best. This adds only a single line of code and is a super-lightweight plugin.

WordPress has a wonderful feature – Menus – that I absolutely love because it lets you manage their own menus  easily. By default, it doesn't seem like there's a way to make your menu links open in a new window. Well the good news, this is super easy and no extra plugin or code required. Here’s what you do.

Prior to WP v3.0, getting menu items to open in a new link was a pain in the rear... but this little hidden checkbox in the new versions makes it super simple. Check it out! (Remember that you do not want ALL items to open in a new tab, only the ones that exit your site.)

While duplicating a blog post is rarely something a "blogger" needs... once you move into using WP as a CMS... for both custom post types and sales pages... duplicating a post (or page) makes a ton of sense! If you're not on a theme that has this built in, here's a simple plugin that gives you a "clone post" tool. I use this on several of my sites.

Many bloggers and WP site owners make the mistake of starting with a /category/ or /date/ based URL system only to later learn that because they are not technically only a (non-evergreen) news site that these URLs are suboptimal when compared to /pagename/. Changing the URL structure though can be a pain in the rump so Tom gives you a clear overview of how to get it done and what you need to put in place to make it happen smoothly and without SEO penalty.
