How secure is your WordPress site? #wordpress | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

One of the main problems with technology is the frequent lapses in security we experience; a lot of information is stolen daily and used to steal more information, send spam messages, open backdoors to systems and sometimes even do damage to our computers.

None of these issues unknown to WordPress, a staggering number of sites have become victims of unpleasant criminals exploiting the community for their own personal gain.

In order for you to beat this threat we’ve put together a roundup of some good tools and tips on how to avoid being the next victim. Or if you’re unlucky enough to already be a victim, how to fight back and fix your installation.

Web Designer’s Arsenal: a Collection of Free Useful Websites

Web Designer’s Arsenal: a Collection of Free Useful Websites | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

A designers are always lacking materials to create a design. Even if time is running out, it’s better to exceed the deadline than do the bad job. The musician has musical instruments to give the world to hear the sounds that play in his head; an artist has a brush, paint and easel to paint a picture that he has in mind, but what about the web designer? A designer has a set of favourite websites with free useful stuff in his bookmarks.

This web designer’s arsenal helps him to win a fight with hard-to-pleased clients and implement all the amazing ideas in order to create a truly great design.

Today I’m going to share with you a collection of free useful websites from my own bookmarks. Of course, I often use a Google search to find some stuff i need. However, why can’t you go to the particular website and know that you will find needed things there for sure. Today’s collection is not just ordinary freebies. To be honest, I spent a lot of time to collect all those websites and all of them have helped me to create really good design at one time. So, take a look at them, choose and download.

All links are not created equal. Effective link building is an art, and whoever tells you different either doesn’t know better or is trying to sell you something.

Here are the ten commandments of link building.

Some of the methods might seem like winners, but in the long run, none of them are sustainable for any business model. Google is constantly evolving to crush anything that’s not considered natural and useful...

The Power of Using Lists for Link Building | SEOmoz

The Power of Using Lists for Link Building | SEOmoz | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

Lists are awesome for link building because someone else has already done some of the hard work for you. If you can find good quality, curated lists of websites, then you can be reasonably sure that you have found sites that are good ones to get links from.

You still want to run your own analysis and due diligence, but the end output is probably going to be a higher majority of quality sites than you would have gotten from pulling lists straight from Google SERPs.

The process I use can be broken down into the following:

1. Find your Lists:

There are multiple ways of doing this and there are probably more places to find them than you think.

- Curated lists found on other websites;
- Top x type lists found on other websites;
- Public Twitter lists;
- Good quality directories;

2. Scrape together your master list:

Here are a couple of ways of pulling link targets from a page very quickly without building a tool.

- Multi-links for Firefox;

- Scrape similar plugin for Chrome;

3. Filter and prioritise:

Now we need to filter, sort and prioritise. Chances are that you have ended up with a pretty big list of potential link targets, so you need someway of knowing where to start to give you a good return.

- Filtering using Excel;

- Filtering using Google Docs;

Guide to Finding Link Building Targets on Social Media Sites

Guide to Finding Link Building Targets on Social Media Sites | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it
There’s been a lot of debate in the SEO community lately regarding social media versus traditional linkbuilding methods. While some SEOs argue that social media links are the wave of the SEO future, traditionalists staunchly maintain traditional, authoritative links from quality sources are still the best way to go.

Whatever your stance, I think it’s easy to agree that gaining links from trusted authorities is desirable for any site — but that doesn’t mean the rise of social shouldn’t affect our outreach methods.

We’ll start with the obvious: social sites allow you to network and build relationships with industry players and authorities. Someone who’s gotten to know you over social media is going to be more receptive to a link request than someone receiving a random email from an outside party.

Link Building via Curation

Link Building via Curation | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

One of the first challenges link builders discover starting in a new industry is that building relationships takes time. Promoting infographics, guest posts, and other linkable assets with cold contacts can be difficult.

So a major focus in link building is relationship building. A few methods we've covered in the past include networking, e-mailing friendly commentary, blog commenting, blogging, using trackbacks, and connecting via Twitter and Linkedin.

In all these cases, the basic strategy is the same: contribute to the conversation in your industry, build relationships with influencers, and hope that those relationships lead to links.

Best Practices for Increasing Website Performance

Best Practices for Increasing Website Performance | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it
It's a no-brainer: well performing websites enjoy higher visitor engagement, retention and conversion.

Increasing Website Performance

The performance of websites and the impact that has, has been well documented over the years. In 2007 Amazon reported that for every 100 ms increase in load time of Amazon.com their sales decreased by 1%. Google also reported similar results in 2006 with their Google Maps product. Google found that by reducing the size of the page from 100KB to 80KB, their traffic shot up by 10% in the first week and then 25% in the following three weeks.

It’s clear that monitoring the performance of a website is a must and should not be ignored as being an integral part of your web design workflow.

How To Become A Top WordPress Developer In An Ocean Of "Experts"

How To Become A Top WordPress Developer In An Ocean Of "Experts" | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

First, let’s set a few things straight: becoming a top WordPress developer is hard work — very hard work. It’s going to take a lot of time, energy and determination. If you’re looking for an easy checklist or some “fast pass” to the top, you’re going to waste your time. Being one of the best is hard, and statistically speaking, the odds are stacked against you.

By the way, installing WordPress, reading a few tutorials and customizing a few themes does not make someone a top developer. They may call themselves an “Expert”, and that’s fine. They may know more than the average person. But a top developer moves far beyond the basics, and pushes the very boundaries of what is possible. They innovate, contribute to the community, and demonstrate mastery in the work they do. So I want you to be more than an “expert”, I want you to be one of the best.

10-Point Guide To Authority Link Building | SEOMoz

10-Point Guide To Authority Link Building | SEOMoz | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Neil Patel at SEOMoz says it right:

"...nearly half of what determines the rank of your site is based upon the types of links driving to your site."

And it is true, that even now, knowing the tactics and skills required to build incoming quality links to a web site, can still be tangibly beneficial to the visibility of that site inside the SERPs.

In this 10-point guide to link-building, Neil Patel provides a good basic roundup of popular approaches to link building while providing inspiration and examples on how to do it.

Here an excerpt of the ten key points he discusses:

Rule 1: Write content that attracts Editorial In-content Links

Rule 2: Fix other people’s broken links

Rule 3: Create a desirable image library

Rule 4: Offer to write a column or do a guest post

Rule 5: Go to where your target audience hangs out

Rule 6: Fill gaps in content

Rule 7: Contact big media at the right time

Rule 8: Approach government or education sites

Rule 9. Buy links without penalty

Rule 10: Know the difference between a good and a bad site"

For each one of the Rules, Neil provides a good explanation of what he means, and some real cases or examples of how you can do this too. He also provides links to some useful resources, tools and examples.

Useful. 7/10

Brainstorming Your Link-Building Strategy | SEOmoz

Brainstorming Your Link-Building Strategy | SEOmoz | Wordpress | Web-building | Scoop.it

[From article intro]

Often when client arrives in need of links, it can be fairly daunting trying to figure out how the heck you’re going to get the link juice you need. Coming up with a structured plan that works is something I’ve been trying to improve over the last year or so, and I’m pretty sure it’s something I’ll be refining for many years to come. At the start of every campaign I’m involved with, I try to sit down and thrash out a load of ideas in an effort to come up with a link-building ‘road map’ to follow for the coming months.

I find having a solid plan useful in two ways. Firstly, for the client, I think it’s really good for them to understand what you are doing with the time they are paying for. In my experience, it really helps to sit down with them and say I’m going to be doing this much of ‘x’ and this much of ‘y’ because of ‘a, b, and c.'

Secondly, having a clear plan to follow is brilliant for me. Having a clear set of tasks allows me to manage my time much more effectively and ensures that I don’t fall behind on anything.

Here are some of the things I like to think about when coming up with a game plan...
