WordPress has long supported automatic embedding of images and videos from online services. With the recent 3.9 release they have added a couple more to the default list of supported embeds, including imgur, the extremely popular image sharing website.

"The key to embedding in WordPress is to place the content’s URL on a line by itself and to make sure it is unlinked.  Older versions have problems with some embeds that use a secure (https) based URL, but most of those will work fine if you change https:// to http:// in the address."

My journey to WordPress began by learning basic HTML, laboriously typed out in Notepad. Over the years I added CSS, then some JavaScript, to gain a bit of interaction with website viewers. File “includes” for reusable page elements like a header and footer, or a menu, made building websites a bit more streamlined—though I still did a lot of hand-coding—and I was comfortable with it. I knew of the existence of WordPress, and CMS systems, and eventually the day came when I sat down and committed to learning WordPress so I could turn over sites to clients and they could update their own content, rather than call me for changes.

I did the same thing with my first wordpress blogs - changed the code.  If you don't mind code, it's quite often much quicker to change something and get it just how you want it!
