When you think of a networking event, what comes to mind? I guess it would depend on the industry. In VO, it's just awesome. If You Take Your Voiceover Career Seriously, Self-Promotion Is A Necessity, Not An Option | Peter K. O'Connell

If You Take Your Voiceover Career Seriously, Self-Promotion Is A Necessity, Not An Option | Peter K. O'Connell | Word Power Studios | Scoop.it

"I am a small business owner who has kids to feed and a mortgage to pay…and that money does NOT come in unless I am out there telling people what I do and how I do it and how what I do will help their business. And I AM the company. Whatever the tag line, no matter the iconography, at the end of the day I, as the professional voice-over talent, am the brand. I am selling myself – just not on a street corner…yet."

Sirenetta Leoni's curator insight, April 13, 2014 6:08 PM

Voice actor and coach, Peter K. O'Connell is right about this. If you are a voice actor, you have to understand that you are running a small business, and you need to approach your career with that mindset. Since advertising, promoting and marketing are an integral part of any business plan, that means that you have to do these things, too. You can't expect others (like the agent fairy perhaps?) to do them for you.

Like Peter, we too have encountered far too many well-trained and talented voice actors who view self-promotion as distasteful or somehow beneath them. They're waiting for someone else (agents, business managers, publicists)  to do the heavy-lifting for them. but It just doesn't work that way for 97% of voice actors in the real world. Even the really, really talented ones.

It's no coincidence that most successful voice actors we know---especially the ones who have managed to sustain a career over a long period of time---are very good at both voiceover and marketing/networking. Almost all have agents, many hire business managers and publicists, but they understand that they have to work with them in a partnership; not abdicate all responsibility for their careers to them. This is why the most successful actors in the world also have their own production companies. If Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence don't feel like self-marketing is beneath them, why should you?

Access + Process = Success

Access + Process = Success | Word Power Studios | Scoop.it
Mental roadblocks are the enemy of many a gifted and talented voice actor. The mental roadblocks (can be procrastination) we subconsciously and oftentimes innocently create can become true hindrances for freelance self-starters. Sometimes it takes a friend or colleague to help you see through it, and once in a while, in a moment of brilliant clarity, you can see it yourself. If not, you may benefit from a little formula I’ve devised. Access + Process = Success Let me break it down for you: ACCESS: The audio files we produce rely on a fairly complicated software/hardware interface associated with a deadline-oriented process. If even the slightest glitch or hitch interferes with you walking into your studio, turning on your audio chain, and beginning the recording; you have slowed your ACCESS, and over time, the glitch grows into a ginormous mental block, preventing, instead of facilitating your next audition. You need easy access to your VO tools. Example: [...]
