Livre/ Dictionnaire du cinéma israélien d’Hélène Schoumann | CineChronicle

Livre/ Dictionnaire du cinéma israélien d’Hélène Schoumann | CineChronicle | Word News | Scoop.it

Will New Words Change How We Think About Illegal Immigration? | PRI's The World

Will New Words Change How We Think About Illegal Immigration? | PRI's The World | Word News | Scoop.it
The Associated Press is dropping the term, 'illegal immigrant.' Why? And what term to use in its place? We offer some suggestions from some non-English language media.
Charles Tiayon's insight:

The Associated Press is dropping the term, ‘illegal immigrant,’ and the New York Times may soon follow suit (though the Times says its change won’t be so sweeping). The Times public editor says “language evolves,” which is undoubtedly does. But so do politics and public attitudes. They more than language evolution seem to be pushing news organizations away from the term ‘illegal immigrant’ right now.

Two groups have campaigned for this change: Drop the I-word and Define American. Monica Novoa, who has run them both, says the use of the word, ‘illegal,’ implies that it is legal terminology, which it is not. She says calling a person illegal, “gives the impression that the whole entity of a person can be illegal.” She prefers ‘undocumented’ or ‘unauthorized.’

Lost in translation: saving Europe's endangered languages

Lost in translation: saving Europe's endangered languages | Word News | Scoop.it
All the latest news from the Press Service of the European Parliament: votes, resolutions, debates, parliamentary committees and the plenary.

Dozens of languages in Europe are not much lost for words as short of speakers with some 120 believed to be dying out. The EP's culture committee discussed the problem with experts on 20 March. However, MEP François Alfonsi believes the final word on these languages has yet to be said. The French member of the Green group is drafting a report on what can be done to support them. Is there still time to save languages such as Lombard, Polesian and Saterlandic?

Mr Alfonsi wants Parliament to play a key role in protecting and promoting endangered languages. "Linguistic diversity is the soul of the European construction," he explained. "There are hundreds of languages in the European Union and each is a part of the European identity."
