NAIROBI - Kenya is leading in providing opportunities for women, with close to $ 3 Billion on offer in the 2015/2016 financial year. The funds that are being provided through various initiatives including the Women's fund, the Youth Fund, and the Uwezo fund are ring fenced so as to provide affirmative action for women.

A Cabinet Minister has urged women to create a database of entrepreneurs in the country to facilitate networking and access to financing for their businesses. Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Minister Nyasha Chikwinya told participants at a stakeholders' meeting in Harare this week that a database will make it easy to share interest, expertise and engage partners to speed up programme and policy action for women's economic empowerment.

Women, when interviewed apart from their husbands and by women researchers, sometimes gave completely different information than their husbands to questions about who was carrying out various tasks in the household.

“When you interview only the head of the household you might miss out information,” Le Masson warned. “It’s crucial to have this gender lens in mind when conducting research at ground level.”

Rather than encouraging states to remove obstacles to development, mobilise official development assistance and commit adequate public resources, this approach puts the emphasis on private sector contributions.

As a result, little attention is given to structural barriers to women’s economic rights or their ability to access, own and control economic resources.

It's not easy out there for women entrepreneurs. Just look at the numbers: Only 3% of majority female-owned firms have revenues over $1 million, compared to 6% of majority male-owned businesses. And, only 6% of partners at venture capital firms are women. There is good news though...

Sounds like a good blog to follow, fellow womenablers! (I would point out that the 200% figure at the outset is not a true figure, since there were industry/definitional changes in the US Census btwn 1977 & 2012.)

Leitch, who put herself through medical school by running a moving company, has become ‘very focused on women entrepreneurs’ since becoming Minister of Status of Women. ‘Fourteen to 15 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses are owned an operated by women like yourself,’ she said, adding those businesses generated over $140 billion in economic wealth in 2013 and employed 1.6 million Canadians.
