The Real Reasons Why Women Don't Run Tech Companies

The Real Reasons Why Women Don't Run Tech Companies | Women & Tech | Scoop.it
This week as Twitter goes public, let’s reintroduce the question about why aren’t more women at the helm of technology companies and other growth industries.

Nicole Bouchier's curator insight, January 23, 2014 7:00 AM

Starts from a young age, where little boys avidly engage in tech whilst girls engage in other pursuits. That lack of natural curiosity by girls (by nature) sows the seed for the the growing divide between boys and girls... the knowledge gained in those earlier years shape a clear pathway for boys, but for girls who decide on a technical path the challenge is to catch up to their tinkering counterparts.

It is those boys who grow up to develop solutions, to influence product design and enterprise solutions; and ultimately to set up companies And sit on boards in positions of influence.  More alarming than 'not having women at the helm of companies' as highlighted in the article, is the fact that women are not even adequately represented at the coal face .

What does this mean for the shape of our web? It means that the web is really a man's crafted domain, and as such the ability for women to engage and influence is further hindered by the gendered solutions and focus.

If it is such a male dominated domain, does the web meet the needs of everyone? How would it look if women were given equal influence in development, architecture, commercialisation. More interestingly, what would it look like if the representation were to be reversed; a World Wide Web designed, delivered and controlled by women. Chances are we would have a very different environment...perhaps better standards defined and ruled less by the pursuits of the few controlling players, and more in the interests of many. Maybe this is a pipe dream, but then, by nature women are more nurturing than competitive, so perhaps somewhat of a reality. Any rate, we will never know, as the web is on a trajectory that can be altered, but not significantly changed. The foundations have been laid, standards defined, and influence established.

Things will change as our current generation enter the workforce, with girls and boys on a far more equal footing given the rise of social web and the rise of consumeristation of the web; the rise of access to understanding without the need to tinker under the bonnet.

Technology is now engaging both genders, so the future looks exciting. We are going to see change in design and application. Change that may not have been perceived as important to men, but may offer significant productivity gains for the currently underrepresented voices. Exciting times ahead.
