How men and women can help reduce gender bias in the workplace

How men and women can help reduce gender bias in the workplace | Women's Workplace Issues | Scoop.it
Men still outnumber women in senior positions in Australian universities and other workplaces. Women are pushing for change but it's men who can help redress the gender balance.
Sarah Frame's insight:
Good article emphasising that 'gender equality lifts us all' - I frequently come across the 'Ds' described by Professor Johnston, usually in conversation with people who really demonstrate unconscious bias. Just last week, a senior executive was at pains to tell me he is totally in favour of equality and would appoint women ''but they don't apply for senior posts'. Yet he didn't consider why and what could be done to improve that situation.

Sarah Frame's insight:

Delighted to see number of women on Boards increasing, although still disappointingly low numbers holding executive Director positions. It is critical that organisations focus on supporting women at lower levels, building the confidence and essential qualities required to move into senior positions.

Northwestern MutualVoice: 3 Ways To Fight Imposter Syndrome

Northwestern MutualVoice: 3 Ways To Fight Imposter Syndrome | Women's Workplace Issues | Scoop.it
What do Tina Fey, Maya Angelou, and Sheryl Sandberg have in common? They all suffered from "imposter syndrome." Such feelings, epitomized by profound self-doubt and a sense of being a fraud, are common among women of every age and every level of success, says Dr. Valerie Young.
Sarah Frame's insight:

This article says around 70% of women experience 'imposter syndrome'. In my work in women's development, I have rarely met a woman ( especially women at senior levels) who does not admit to this as an issue - myself included. And undoubtedly, it can be a hindrance to us, causing unnecessary stress and anxiety. But you know what, sometimes that's also what makes us good - drives us to put every effort into succeeding.

Fostering Women Leaders: A fitness test for your top team

Fostering Women Leaders: A fitness test for your top team | Women's Workplace Issues | Scoop.it

The challenges are well known: women in business continue to face a formidable gender gap for senior-leadership positions.1 Moreover, there are fewer and fewer women at each step along the path to the C-suite, although they represent a majority of entry-level employees at Fortune 500 companies and outnumber men in college-graduation rates.2 Increasingly, the barriers too are well known: a mix of cultural factors, ingrained mind-sets, and stubborn forms of behavior, including a tendency to tap a much narrower band of women leaders than is possible given the available talent pool.

What Is Success?

What Is Success? | Women's Workplace Issues | Scoop.it
Co-authored by Emily Thomas and Marsha McCullough

No matter who you are, you find yourself thinking about what success is, and, how you can lay the foundation for it -- personally and professionally.
Sarah Frame's insight:

A thought provoking question and one which means different things to different people. Made me think - how do I define my success? What is 'success to me? is it in terms of my career achievements - positions I have held, or earnings, or overcoming challenges or combining bringing up my family with developing a successful career.  Or is it defined by the value I hope I have added to the lives of others, whether that is those that I love and care about, or those I am connected to through work or leisure activities. And how will I measure my success in the future, in this different phase of my life. Hmm, needs some thought…  What does success mean to you??
