12 y.o ‘slut’ Facebook pages and the death of Amanda Todd: MTR Feminist Current interview | Melinda Tankard Reist | Women of The Revolution | Scoop.it

The tragic story of Amanda Todd has been covered widely by the media and has impacted people across the continent. It’s been noted that the connected issues of sexualization, misogyny and violence against women have been left out of much of the media coverage.

In the first half of the show I speak with Melinda Tankard Reist about the sexualization of young girls, the 12 year old slut meme Facebook page, and the Amanda Todd tragedy. Melinda is a Canberra author, speaker, media commentator, and advocate for women and girls. She is known for her work on the objectification of women and sexualisation of girls and her work to address violence against women. Melinda has published several books, including: Getting Real: Challenging the Sexualisation of Girls.

In the second half of the show I speak with Fazeela Jiwa, a South Asian woman who grew up in Vancouver, B.C. She has an MA in literature and is trained as a teacher. Fazeela has done work with Vancouver Rape Relief and many alternative education organizations.

Sure, you know Gloria Steinem, but do you know Dolores Huerta?

While Bell Hooks told us feminism is for everybody, history books represent a movement by and for white women primarily. Though often on the periphery, there are many feminist foremothers of color who helped build the movement. Here are just some of the Latina feministas who fought for the rights of women and other marginalized communities in the U.S.

Feminism shouldn’t make men comfortable

Feminism shouldn’t make men comfortable | Women of The Revolution | Scoop.it

And here lies another issue. Even the men willing to come to the table after accepting the invitation often refuse to be made uncomfortable. There’s no progress to be had if in order to get men engaged they are allowed to remain ensconced in their privilege. That defeats the purpose. The necessary work of feminist movement will challenge men to understand their complicity and require them to complete very difficult tasks. That’s what revolution is.

Why It Matters That Lena Dunham Wrote About Being Raped In College

Why It Matters That Lena Dunham Wrote About Being Raped In College | Women of The Revolution | Scoop.it

The actress' new memoir includes a candid exploration of sexual assault that highlights the confusion over what exactly rape looks like.

Public figures like Dunham can help nudge us toward that shift, too. By explaining how that sexual encounter made her feel, and acknowledging it took time to realize she was raped, Dunham is adding her voice to the growing movement to confront everyday sexual violence. And she might help some of the young women who read her book find the words to name past experiences that they hadn’t previously known how to classify.

Why I’m Not Really Here For Emma Watson’s Feminism Speech At the U.N. -

Actor Emma Watson, of Harry Potter movie fame, is a new Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women and she spoke at the UN on Saturday to launch the HeForShe campaign, which aims to mobilize men to end gender inequality somehow (the campaign doesn’t seem to call men to any particular action of any sort). The campaign wants men to make gender equality their issue, too, and Ms. Watson extended “a formal invitation” to men to do so.

This message is flawed and unfortunate, as well. Telling men that they should care about gender inequality because of how much it hurts them, centralizes men and their well-being in a movement built by women forour survival in a world that degrades and dehumanizes us daily. This is problematic for the same reason telling white people that they should end racism because racism “holds us all back as a society, so eradicating it will help you, too,” is problematic.
