Facebook has spread like an infectious disease but we are slowly becoming immune to its attractions, and the platform will be largely abandoned by 2017, say researchers at Princeton University (pdf).
The forecast of Facebook's impending doom was made by comparing the growth curve of epidemics to those of online social networks. Scientists argue that, like bubonic plague, Facebook will eventually die out.
The social network, which celebrates its 10th birthday on 4 February, has survived longer than rivals such as Myspace and Bebo, but the Princeton forecast says it will lose 80% of its peak user base within the next three years.
John Cannarella and Joshua Spechler, from the US university's mechanical and aerospace engineering department, have based their prediction on the number of times Facebook is typed into Google as a search term. The charts produced by the Google Trends service show Facebook searches peaked in December 2012 and have since begun to trail off.
"Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological models," the authors claim in a paper entitled Epidemiological modelling of online social network dynamics.
"Ideas are spread through communicative contact between different people who share ideas with each other. Idea manifesters ultimately lose interest with the idea and no longer manifest the idea, which can be thought of as the gain of 'immunity' to the idea."
Facebook reported nearly 1.2 billion monthly active users in October, and is due to update investors on its traffic numbers at the end of the month. While desktop traffic to its websites has indeed been falling, this is at least in part due to the fact that many people now only access the network via their mobile phones.

You’re not alone. Facebook recently made changes to its algorithm and the reach of brand pages has been negatively affected. According to Jim Tobin, President of Ignite Social Media, “Ignite analysts reviewed 689 posts across 21 brand pages (all of significant size, across a variety of industries) and found that, in the week since December 1, organic reach and organic reach percentage have each declined by 44 percent on average, with some pages seeing declines as high as 88 percent. Only one page in the analysis had improved reach, which came in at 5.6 percent.” He also noted that brand page reach is now often under 3%. About a year ago, Facebook contended brand page posts could potentially reach 16% of the brand fans. Ignite’s analysis shows that’s not the case any more. In fact, according to Ignite, the average post on popular brand pages reach only 2.5 percent of their fans. This is bad news for brands who have invested a lot of effort and resources building an audience on Facebook. We all know the importance of organic reach and that organic content and engaged fans is the holy grail when it comes to success at social media marketing. Organic has always produced better results than paid post. And who really wants to pay Facebook to boost posts with a best case scenario reach of 3%? 8) Preservation One of the official digital curator key responsibilities lays specifically in archiving and preserving anything of value that is collected, just like a museum curator does. For these reasons professional content curation tools will have to include among their features the ability to: a) fully photograph, b) archive and c) create a searchable index of any such web content, page or information resource being curated.
9) Private Collections The need to offer “private” collections / streams that can be accessed via subscription or sold as downloadable PDF (or in other formats) will also come of time soon.
10) Full Capture Abilities The curator needs to equipped with qualified tools that can allow him to easily clip a short text excerpt from a page, a whole web page, an image or parts of a video. Few content curation tools excel on this front, and none does a great job of creating screenshot-based web page collections that contain full page screenshots.
11) Monetization All these platform have an opportunity to gradually discover and identify the most valuable curators in their community and to support them by either having relevant brands sponsoring specific verticals, via sponsored stories or via paid subscriptions.
12) Content Types Begging To Be Curated Most of the curated content today are news, images and products. Still, there are some areas that completely lack, or offer only one or two useful and easy-to-use curation tools. Take for example audio curation. There's no dedicated curation tool that I know of that can help me curate podcasts, audio recordings and newscasts easily.
13) Beyond News & Articles Until now we have been used to see the work of the content curator give life to streams of news stories via a Twitter or Facebook channel. In the future it is very likely that beyond these popular uses, you will see the work of content curators specifically contribute to the creation of valuable collections in the form of actual: books, magazines, textbooks, video playlists - programmes, shopping directories and more others.
14) Specialized Curation Tools I expect new curation tools to diversify themselves from the crowded competition by specializing in a specific area and for a specific group of users.
