Autism has become a critical issue in our society. One of the major problems with the disorder itself lies in diagnosis. Many parents are often reluctant to think that their child may have autism. As a result, children often aren't diagnosed until they get into full-time social situations, i.e. daycare, preschool, first grade even. In these instances, precious time has been lost; time that could have spent preparing both parent and child with basic coping mechanisms as they approach the beginnings of school.
In this slideshow, Leslie Burby, editor of Autism Parenting Magazine, provides a glimpse of the early signs of autism. She even gives us a glimpse into her own struggle in her daughter's diagnosis.
Children are our angels and they deserve the best that we can give them. Sometimes that means facing challenges early on so we can conquer later on. Leslie will be my guest next month (August 2013) on The Geek Girl Show (www.thegeekgirlshow.com) to discuss this and other issues. It is sure to be an uplifting and enlightening show. Be sure to check The Geek Girl Show site's Podcasts page for podcast post time.
