The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship

The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship | Women Business Owners Insights | Scoop.it
No one said building a company was easy. But it's time to be honest about how brutal it really is--and the price so many founders secretly pay.
Nancy Chorpenning's insight:

As if WE need to be told that starting a business is hard! Still an excellent and thoughtful article. "'People who are on the energetic, motivated, and creative side are both more likely to be entrepreneurial and more likely to have strong emotional states,. says [psychiatrist and former entrepreneur Michael A.] Freeman. Those states may include depression, despair, hopelessness, worthlessness, loss of motivation, and suicidal thinking."

7 Networking Tips for Women Owners

7 Networking Tips for Women Owners | Women Business Owners Insights | Scoop.it
Want to grow your business? Do what men do. Have big networks filled with people who can connect you to money, markets and talent. (RT @QueenicSocial: 7 Networking Tips for Women Owners!
Nancy Chorpenning's insight:

I agree with most of Geri's points. My work with NAWBO has been rewarding for more than merely networking! But I disagree vehemently about "collecting business cards" at networking events. I steer clear of folks who do this at events, and I'd prefer to have one or two meaningful conversations with people I might want to see again than to flit from person to person. One cannot be personal or very authentic, and certainly can't take her advicce about giving back in 2 minutes when you're thinking about your next victim!

Nice to see All Things Digital's Kara Swisher approaches the Yahoo purchase of Tumblr without taking a shot at Marissa Mayer like some others have. There is more than one VC in SV upset that she is destroying employee morale with acquistions like this. It does cause one to wonder where those critics were when Bill Gates was making such moves.

What's Ahead for the SBA in 2013

With the current uncertainty in Washington, D.C., what's in store for the Small Business Administration this year is a mostly hazy forecast. We asked some SBA watchers to share their views.
Nancy Chorpenning's insight:
Access to capital and federal contracting will help all small businesses. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 lifted the caps on women-owned small-business contract set-asides. Also, as part of the law, the SBA will have to conduct a study to determine what industries do not have a representative number of women-owned businesses.

Richard Branson on Why We Need More Women in the Boardroom

Richard Branson explains why we need more women in top positions.

Via Sandra Brevett
Nancy Chorpenning's insight:

He didn't need to go back as far as this picture reflects to find businesswomen in secondary roles.

It was not until 1988 that Women Business Owners were able to sign financial instruments (e.g., bank loans) without a male relative (could be a son, cousin, brother, husband, not even involved in the business( co-signing.

In 1988, thanks to the tenacious and courageous actions of a few women and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), H.R.5050 was passed, "The Women's Business Ownership Act."

Here are some of the things HR5050 provided:

Established the Women’s Business Center program.Established SBA’s Office of Women’s Business OwnershipEstablished (really required creation of) National Women’s Business Council (NWBC)Required that the U.S. Census Bureau include C corporations when presenting data on women-owned firms. Including women-owned C corporations showed “more than double the number of people employed by women-owned businesses and one and half times the dollars in revenue.” (NAWBO)Eliminated all individual state laws that required women to have a male relative sign a business loan. Directed SBA to provide financial assistance to private organizations to conduct demonstration projects giving financial, management, and marketing assistance to WOSBsIncreased SBA access to capital

The 'Hierarchy of Entrepreneurs' Needs' Upstart "I think the life cycle of an entrepreneur from that initial moment of daring to becoming a tycoon almost perfectly mirrors the human experience," said the "Shrink for Entrepreneurs," Peter Shallard,...
Nancy Chorpenning's insight:

Nancy Chorpenning's curator insight,Today, 5:48 PM

I'm a huge Maslow fan. My dad introduced me to his Hierarchy of Needs many moons ago, and they've been helpful to undertsatdnig behavior and motivation. While I admire Shallard's idea of adapting this to Entrepreneurs, I take issue with some of his thoughts.

In the first level, to make this "gender neutral," wine needs to be included alongside beer. Another first level need is a plan. Maybe not a full-blown business plan. But my experience has taight me that entrepreneurs need something to keep them focused, lest their brilliant idea never reach fruition. ANd office space – hmmm. Not out of the gate, uhnless you're in an incubator where there are other bennies.

In his third level, the idea of "needing" business partners confounds me. If he's saying outside partners, OK. But women entrepreneurs in particular may prefer to keep those partners as advisors, mentors, etc. there's nothing worse to disctract than the WRONG partner.
