According to the UN, only 17% of ministers in governments across the world are women, and just 20% of the world's parliamentarians are female. In Cameroon, that figure is just 14%. With elections due on 30 September, the main political parties introduced a 30% quota, and organisations such as Community Initiative for Sustainable Development and VSO are helping to train women into decision-making roles at all political levels.

Juliana Buhring: The first woman to cycle around the world

Everyone said I shouldn't do it People said that I wasn't ready, that I wasn't a cyclist and I didn't know what I was doing. I trained for eight months in Italy, though I hadn't cycled before that since wobbling around on a bike when I was five.

Juliana Buhring was born and raised in the Family of Love cult, and escaped at the age of 23. She now holds the Guinness World Record for the first and fastest woman to cycle the world.

Indra Nooyi is a successful business woman and the current chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, the second largest food and beverage business in the world by net revenue.

"If you are a woman and especially a person of colour, there are two strikes against you," Indra Nooyi told the audience at a lecture at Dartmouth College in 2002. "Immigrant, person of colour, and woman, three strikes against you... So I would work extra hard at it. More hours, yes. More sacrifices and trade-offs, yes. That has been the journey."

An amazing woman who sacrificed her whole life to help unlucky people in Vietnam, even though she doesn't have a single drop of Vietnamese blood in her. Aline Rebeaud deserves some serious consideration from all of us.
