Nigeria girl faces murder trial over forced marriage | Gender, Religion, & Politics | Scoop.it

Kortney Renee Honstein's curator insight, December 1, 2014 6:31 PM

A 14 year old girl was accused of poisoning the 35 year old man her parents forced her to marry because she was not in love with him. She also killed three others because of they ate the food she covered in rat poison. Police questioned her without a parent or lawyer present so everything she said they couldn't use. Therefore her lawyer tried saying that he confession to killing her husband was false. She also did not give her parents permission to find her a husband which is something you have to do in order to marry a child younger than 21 off. They ended up dismissing the charges for fear of reputation. They told everyone that she was a victim, because she could have been raped by the man she was forced to marry.

Sammie Bryant's curator insight, January 2, 11:58 PM

this article applies to gender equality as well as religion. the piece talks about a Nigerian woman facing a murder trial over a forced marriage. since gender equality is at its lowest in southeast Asia, the middle east, and sub-Saharan Africa, it makes sense that this event occurred in Nigeria. in these countries, women are usually treated as second class citizens- where there most important decisions are made by the male figures in their lives. this applies to our 5th unit of APHUG, the one concerning gender.

A growing body of research links violent video games to aggressive and antisocial behavior.
DrSophi's insight:

"By now you're probably heard of #Gamergate, the internet lynch mob masquerading as a movement for ethics in video game journalism. Though #Gamergaters, as they're known, have repeatedly targeted their critics with rape and death threats, drawing rebukes from the broader gaming community, surprisingly few observers have asked whether violent video games themselves may have triggered this sort of abhorrent behavior." - Mother Jones

Karene Crumb's curator insight, January 1, 1:23 AM

I found this an interesting topic. I think it's neat that employers are offering this kind of thing to their employees. I don't feel it would be seen as paying women to save childbearing for later, they can do that whenever, employers cannot fire them for wanting a family, that's just not right..
