Jon Cleary reimagines Allen Toussaint just in time for New Orleans Jazz Fest

Over dinner, Jon Cleary's manager posed a quasi-hypothetical question: If you could ever be tempted to record an album of someone else's songs, who would it be? Cleary considered, then reached a logical conclusion: Allen Toussaint .

Davy Graham: Anthology 1961-2007 Lost Tapes – review | WNMC Music | Scoop.it

A new anthology of one of British folk's greatest guitarists is a patchy affair, but has reminders of Graham's genius, writes Robin Denselow...Davy Graham was a guitarist who transformed the British folk scene with his extraordinary ability to mix blues and traditional songs with jazz and classical styles, and influences from north Africa or India. After his death in 2008 Decca released the excellent anthology, A Scholar and a Gentleman, and now comes a new, three-album set including Graham's earliest recordings and one of his final concert appearances.

Meditations on Mingus’ 90th - By Tom Reney

Meditations on Mingus’ 90th - By Tom Reney | WNMC Music | Scoop.it

The closest I ever came to meeting Charles Mingus was when I followed him up the stairs of the Jazz Workshop in Boston on a wintry Sunday afternoon. He’d just finished his matinee set, and as he headed out to Boylston Street in a belted, butterscotch-brown leather coat, he slipped on the icy sidewalk. My friend Nic and I made a quick grab for his arms to keep him from going down, and once the startled Mingus righted himself, he offered us a nervous thank you. The ensuing moment did not seem right for an adoring line of introduction from either of us, so we moved on. I would see Mingus several times more in concert, but that was the closest I got to the great musician in person.

Scofield/Brookmeyer duet

Scofield/Brookmeyer duet | WNMC Music | Scoop.it
In 1981, guitarist John Scofield received a phone call at his hotel in the Netherlands while touring with his band. On the other line was a local TV-show producer. He needed a sub to play with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer that night on a show. John jumped at the chance.

The result of that appearance is below and features Bob and John performing Moonlight in Vermont as a duet. Listen to what Bob does with the melody and where he goes with the lines. Listen for the traps he creates while taking creative risks—and how he turns the tables on them to produce completely new melody lines. And dig John's tender fusion voicings that are both distinct and supportive...

Paul Simon has 'no regrets' over 'Graceland' controversy | WNMC Music | Scoop.it
The star was widely criticised for breaking the cultural boycott of Apartheid-era South Africa...Paul Simon has insisted that he was no regrets over the recording of his album 'Graceland' in South Africa.

The folk legend was widely criticised for travelling to the country and making the 1986 with South African musicians, for effectively breaking the cultural boycott of the country due to its racist Apartheid regime.

Although the album was a smash hit and is now credited with bringing local music to the a global audience, he was also censured at the time by the African National Congress, who implied that he was supporting the regime. Anyone who saw [Radiohead's] meditative surprise Glastonbury set, or heard the intricate, quiet beauty of last album The King of Limbs, would have to agree. These days, they instead sound like what one might have imagined a Blue Note modern jazz quintet would morph into by the 21st century.

Jazz Musician of the Day: Joe Henderson

Jazz Musician of the Day: Joe Henderson | WNMC Music | Scoop.it
All About Jazz is celebrating Joe Henderson's birthday today!

The tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson was born on April 24, 1937 in a small city called Lima Ohio midway between Dayton and Toledo. So many tenor saxophonists who came of age in the 1960s adapted heavily from both Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, but none exceeded the success that Joe Henderson had in forging his own inimitable style from two such familiar influences. Henderson’s “inside-outside” approach was nuanced enough to bring vitality to tender ballads and abrasive enough to set more dynamic songs afire.
