How Mick Jagger stalled and then shelved TV director's documentary on the Rolling Stones

How Mick Jagger stalled and then shelved TV director's documentary on the Rolling Stones | WNMC Music | Scoop.it
Director tells Edinburgh television festival he is still bitter after his run-in with the singer...The award-winning director behind the 7 Up series has spoken for the first time of his disappointment and bitterness that a dispute with Mick Jagger prevented the release of a potentially landmark Rolling Stones documentary he shot a decade ago.

Michael Apted revealed that he occasionally screens a rough cut of a feature-length documentary, which includes footage of rehearsals and the opening dates of the Rolling Stones' record breaking 40th anniversary Licks tour, for friends. However, the film, shot in 2002, has never been released.

Apted said that Jagger told him during a meeting in Las Vegas that the film he had delivered as a rough cut would not do the band any good, adding that the Rolling Stones frontman had brought "his hitman in to deal with it".

The Curmudgeon: Music Machines

Last month I found myself in Traverse City, Mich., at the Music House Museum. The museum started as a collection of pre-1930s music-making machines stored in a farmer’s barn amid the area’s omnipresent orchards. The farmer and his local collector pals eventually decided to spruce up the barn and throw open the doors to the public.

In the early decades of the 20th century, there was a craze for such gizmos. Records weren’t popular yet, so taverns would install a player piano in the corner to perform the function later handled by jukeboxes. People with more money than musical talent would install one in their parlors to impress their friends. Public parks were filled with such machines, ranging from shopping-cart-sized hand-cranked organs to van-sized or even school-bus-sized machines that combined several instruments into one mechanism. The most complicated, simulating the most instruments, were called orchestrions.

Revered around the world but never a major star, worshipped by critics and connoisseurs but perpetually strapped for cash, the towering Chicago tenor saxophonist Von Freeman practically went out of his way to avoid commercial success. Oh, the Banjo.

Oh, the Banjo. | WNMC Music | Scoop.it
Here’s something you don’t hear an Asian say often: “I LOVE THE BANJO!

Frankly, I don’t hear a lot of white people say it, either, and this makes me sad.

When I expound on my adoration for this beautiful instrument, I often get weird looks. Maybe it’s because I don’t fit the “bluegrass” mold, or maybe people aren’t aware of how wonderful it is, or maybe it’s because I have a giant banjo with the words “Hootenanny 4 Life” in a blackletter font tattooed on my neck. (Mom, I’m kidding. Please stop sweating.)

Universal Music Group May Sell More Assets For EMI Deal Approval

Universal Music Group May Sell More Assets For EMI Deal Approval | WNMC Music | Scoop.it

Opponents of merger say concessions don't go far enough...While the majority of third parties are satisfied with UMG's concessions, which include an offer to sell 60 percent of EMI's European assets, some opponents of the deal still say the merger would hinder competition by creating a company with too much power. To address those concerns, UMG could sell an additional $370 million in EMI's global rights, which analysts say would make the deal less attractive for Universal.
