As a member of the Grammy award-winning Turtle Island Quartet, cellist Mark Summer said “it helps to have big ears.”
Summer explained that the musicians, which include founder David Balakrishnan and Mateusz Smoczynski, both on violin, and Benjamin von Gutzeit on viola, all listen to a variety of music, not just classical, which comes in handy when improvising musical compositions.
“Miles Davis did that, so did other iconic performers,” Summer said in a phone interview from his home in Novato, Calif., early Thursday afternoon. “I think it helps to listen to a variety of genres, not just one kind of music.”
