Wisdom is what makes a wizard... and this post truly tickled my wizardly fancies. Not only a review of what looks like a fantastic new book on Practical Wisdom... but a review the way I wish every review was done. It not only makes me want to read the book... but adds to what the author has found already in the book.  The one book made me want to explore the whole "Brain Pickings" site - something I highly recommend. This looks like fascinating reading for would-be wizards. I'm ordering my copy now. Newton didn't make it into "The Wizard's Way" as one of my examples...and now I'm wondering how I missed him.  an opportunity for future articles or books, I guess.

I think physicists MUST have the wizard's property of being willing to look at things from many different perspectives if they are to help us make progress in understanding our world - and the courage to think as "renegades" as well. Newton, Einstein and Richard Feynman... all willing to rethink what others simply accepted, and to put forth their thoughts without caring about who might ridicule them. True wizard traits!

Systems Thinking and the Future of Cities

Systems Thinking and the Future of Cities | Wizards | Scoop.it
The idea that nothing exists in isolation−but only as part of a system−has long been embedded in folklore, religious scriptures, and common sense.

Via Erika Harrison
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

One of the things that gives real wizards their "powers," is the ability to see the world as systems within systems within systems... and then finding the leverage points, where a small action in one part of the system might cause a very large response elsewhere...

This post and article discuss that whole idea in a bit more depth. I found it to be a good read.

Non-linear futures.

Joe Boutte's curator insight, September 11, 12:54 PM

This article is a little different than most articles curated for everyday leadership, but is relevant from the perspective that leaders have to consider their entire environment and situation.  A systems approach to leading is indispensible for enabling better decisions and exercising effective influence among the people of one's situation or organization.  In this example, the focus is on the future of cities, but a leader could be focused on the strategy, vision, and objective, and so the concepts in this article are pertinent to your everyday leadership.  Think big! Think system!

Tobias Beckwith's insight:

Interesting thoughts by George Ambler - and in this case, what goes for leaders, goes double for those seeking to become true wizards.  The biggest changes you need to make aren't just skills, but they go deeper, to mindset.  Learning to embrace new experience, take on radical responsibility and adopt the creative mindset are essential.

Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast

Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast | Wizards | Scoop.it

Culture eats strategy for breakfast, technology for lunch, and products for dinner, and soon thereafter everything else too. Why? Because company culture, a concept pioneered by Edgar Schein, is the operationalizing of an organization’s values. Culture guides employee decisions about both technical business decisions and how they interact with others. Good culture creates an internal coherence in actions taken by a very diverse group of employees.

Via Kenneth Mikkelsen, Jerry Busone, Roy Sheneman, PhD, JLAndrianarisoa, Jose Luis Yañez, Erika Harrison
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

This seems to be a theme for my day... this is the third place I"ve encountered the idea, and it's not even 9am yet. When we seek to create change in the world, all too often we ignore the most powerful thing working against us - the culture in which we're working. So how can you work with that? Make your change "fit" the culture? Find ways to change the culture itself?

Anne Landreat's curator insight, May 21, 8:40 AM

Anne-Laure Delpech's curator insight, May 23, 2:19 AM

J'aime beaucoup ces propos :

"“You can’t complain here,” Tamara explained. “If you see something wrong, you must fix it. We say it is a great opportunity to come up with a solution, and this is where many of our best programs have come from. Anything can be changed. We aren’t victim to anyone. We own the culture.”"

It's getting easier to spot real wizards who are women. Sophia Amoroso certainly qualifies. Think I'm in love:

One of my favorite quotes is from George Bernard Shaw, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” I think we as a culture spend too much time looking at role models or other fascinating lives instead of spending time creating our own. And that’s probably the best lesson to learn from my story.
