A link within a link...perhaps a few "linking rings" here. OK, the metaphor doesn't hold, but I couldn't resist handing out a bit of punnishment.

But if you have young magicians in the family, and are attending the combined convention... this is for them!

How to Change Minds: Blaise Pascal on the Art of Persuasion

How to Change Minds: Blaise Pascal on the Art of Persuasion | Wizards | Scoop.it
“People are generally better persuaded by the reasons which they have themselves discovered than by those which have come into the mind of others.” If it weren’t for the “backfire effect” — the strange psychological phenomenon behind our propensity...
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

Changing minds is the key to changing the world. Once again, I'm indebted to the wonderful Brain Pickings blog of Maria Popova for drawing attention to... and writing so beautifully about this subject, so near and dear to all aspiring wizards and change makers.

Celebrating Einstein - MIT News

Celebrating Einstein - MIT News | Wizards | Scoop.it
Events across MIT will mark the 100th anniversary of the general theory of relativity.
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

Einstein is a great exemplar of the modern wizard, especially for his ability to view one idea or subject from many, many different points of view. And, of course, for his renegade style of thinking about anything and everything. So... let's celebrate the anniversary of one of his best known accomplishments, the theory of general relativity!

Bertrand Russell, Søren Kierkegaard, Andrei Tarkovsky, Susan Sontag, Adam Phillips, Renata Adler, and more.
“I can excuse anything but boredom,” Hedy Lamarr famously quipped.
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

It's so important for those aspiring to true wizardry that we learn to look at things from many different points of view... especially those we might "never consider." Once again, Maria Popova's Brain Picking's blog does just that. In this case, it's the idea that boredom is always bad...

If you're brain is truly alive, I think you'll enjoy this post (and most of what appears on Brain Pickings).

Why You Need to Channel Your Inner Albert Einstein

Why You Need to Channel Your Inner Albert Einstein | Wizards | Scoop.it
It's hard to modify your vision. But sometimes it's absolutely necessary. Sometimes you need to pivot.
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

This touches on a couple of different Wizard Techniques: First, Einstein's own willingness to examine things from different points of view, and second... the ability to "channel" or take on another's point of view... to role play, in other words... in order to take on their ways of thinking and weilding their innate powers.

One Billion Rising: how can public dancing end violence against women? | Wizards | Scoop.it
Ahead of Saturday’s worldwide dance demo, Eve Ensler explains why her campaign to raise awareness of violence is so important, sets out what OBR has achieved and hits back at her critics
Tobias Beckwith's insight:

V-Day has come again, and inspired women... and men, worldwide. Initially dreamed up and promoted by Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, the event encourages women worldwide to "rise" in a non-violent but eloquent way, to call attention to and stop the almost habitual brutality they suffer. Ensler's unique approad to raising awareness is one of the reasons I've included her as a modern exemplar of someone following "The Wizard's Way."

Tobias Beckwith's insight:

Eve Ensler rocks! Glad to see Hollywood picking up on her expertise... maybe they'll even get the idea to start weaving more of her ideas into other blockbusters. Anti-feminist habit is so woven into the fabric of our culture, it's like the dirty water in the fishtank. None of us fish even notices until someone like Ensler shouts at us to clean it up!
