Ethics and Power: How to Strike the Right Balance

Ethics and Power: How to Strike the Right Balance | Wise Leadership | Scoop.it
Power dynamics are inevitable--and essential--to a functioning organization. Here's how to make sure they're used for good and not evil.

John Michel's curator insight, April 29, 2013 8:07 PM

Company cultures, about ethics or anything else, get created by the promotion, compensation, and evaluation choices made every day. Although there are clearly good and bad people, mostly the line between good and bad runs through each one of us. Therefore, the best and possibly only way to ensure the desired behavior is to be clear about norms and expectations and make every decision with the how, not just the what, firmly in mind.

Maya Mathias's curator insight, April 22, 2013 12:59 PM

Need some hard data to see if you should display empathy as a leader?  This article contains some thought starters.

AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, April 28, 2013 8:04 AM

Empathy is one of my top strength themes that I try to leverage intentionally in times of stress and frustration.  It is very useful to learn about the different types of empathy.  I can now apply this knowledge as I work to improve my self-mastery.  Thanks Maya!

From the article:

Empathy’s Role in Emotional Intelligence

Research shows people can experience and exhibit three kinds of empathy:

~ Cognitive

~ Emotional

~ Compassionate

Authenticity requires comfortably connecting with others.

donhornsby's curator insight, April 26, 2013 3:57 PM

(From the article): Authenticity — what is it, who has it, and how do you get it? Most people associate authenticity with being true to oneself — or "walking the talk." But there's a problem with that association; it focuses on how you feel about yourself. Authenticity is actually a relational behavior, not a self-centered one. Meaning that to be truly authentic, you must not only be comfortable with yourself, but must also comfortably connect with others.

Half of employees ‘feel threatened by bosses’

Half of employees ‘feel threatened by bosses’ | Wise Leadership | Scoop.it

Almost half of employees (47%) say they feel threatened by leaders within their organisations, according to research published today.

The research, by development consultancy Head Heart + Brain, found that poor leadership skills have led many employees to feel "actively threatened" by their bosses' behaviour.

AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, April 20, 2013 9:58 PM

This is truly concerning.  From the article:

"In the current economic climate, both business and public-sector leaders feel they have to run just in order to stand still. They are under immense pressure to make their organisations leaner while also improving performance.

And pressure breeds threatening behaviour if it isn't channelled in the right way. If it is managed in the wrong way, stress can gradually erode the quality of their leadership until it deteriorates to a disastrously low level.

"It creates a vicious downward cycle where productivity begins to suffer as the work force begins to feel increasingly threatened by brain-fried leaders."

Because being honest about what you fear is essential to real change.

If you can be unflinchingly honest in saying “I don’t know this,” or “I’m worried I won’t be able to do that,” or “that makes me uncomfortable,” you can be brave enough to move into that awkward place of exploration where you’re trying something new; the novice phase that’s part of all true growth.
