(From the article): If you're struggling with approachability because of persistent shyness or fear of appearing vulnerable, you can still overcome the hurdle breaking the practices down into smaller steps and setting incremental goals for yourself that include practicing with people outside of work--on a plane, in line at the store, or in your neighborhood. For example, a micro-step for number 1 might be making the first move with one person at one event. The easiest way to do this is to scan the room for anyone else who is standing alone. Being approachable doesn't mean changing your core personality, it's simply a way to ensure that more people have access to you and what you have to offer.

 Becoming more approachable will have numerous benefits in your career. You'll gain access to more information faster and grow your network by being known as someone who is interesting and engaging. Awareness of the importance of being approachable is a starting point. Then, these six tips can help you build that awareness and the skills you need to sustain and invite future conversations around the office.

The article is written by Manfred Kets de Vries of INSEAD. Here's one truth he shares:


"On a deeper level fairy tales can touch on humankind’s deepest fears and desires and be a source of inspiration. By identifying with characters in fairy tales, executives can come to better understand their own internal struggles and turn into more self-aware leaders."

(From the article): As leaders, you must begin to look beyond the obvious and open your eyes to see the opportunities previous unseen.   Leadership requires you to have circular vision and when you begin to grow complacent, you only see the obvious details before you – rather than those they lie around, beneath and beyond what you seek.  In fact, your mindset becomes stagnate because you are not stretching your perspectives enough to see more than you want to.

 

When you fall into this trap, it’s time to reshuffle the deck, and map out the internal and external factors that are influencing your thinking. You must begin to identify areas that can be improved –  such as relationships, workshop culture, networking, how you are investing in yourself (or lack thereof), etc.

 

It’s not experience, but rather opportunity that is the true mother of success.   Be more mindful about how you manage opportunity before it begins to manage you.

The first lesson is a good place to begin. We become so busy we do not look up and from side-to-side. Leaders need to be present and aware of what is happening and not happening. They need to be aware of who is best served to take the reins in a given situation.

 

In School, leadership and management should be intertwined. Quite often, I found that the latter was used almost exclusively and leadership did not exist.

The study results reveal reflection to be a powerful mechanism behind learning, confirming the words of American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer John Dewey: We do not learn from experience ... we learn from reflecting on experience." We are a society that puts a huge emphasis on rewards, and a school of psychology is based on it. In behavioral psychology, an American invention, there are two ways to stimulate a response from someone, either reward them or punish them. This two-way mechanism works with lower animals - dog and horse trainers, for example, use food treats to reinforce the behavior they want - so it should work with humans, or so the logic goes. If you want a certain behavior out of prisoners, for example, behaviorists advise giving privileges as a reward for obeying the rules and punishment for disobeying them.

Well, rest the common sense of the right balance... all attempts to break into actionable pieces what is in the very actual situation is impossible are futile... sometimes intuition is better than too much thinking and sometimes intuition puts things astray...it's a bit mote complicated than "less thinking & moreintuition"" (see books like "Think twice",  "Think again" or Kahneman's...)...

 

Of course and it' an interesting aspect that the  staff is how influenced by how the decision is made... decisions might be powerful  and  with full of confidence made by either by more thinking by more by intuition, the essence is the  congruity, the authenticity of those making it and the transparence of the process...

I guess it is time we realised that overthinking and overanalyzing do not give good returns after all! The ideal CEO is a person who can handle various tasks without getting bogged down by a single task due to over thinking. However, there are many of us who become obsessed with somehow getting to the rooot of a particular problem without realising that we are neglecting other tasks!

Daniel Goleman, in his article “Leadership That Gets Results”, has identified six different leadership styles, and he believes that good leaders will adopt one of these six styles to meet the needs of different situations.

 

None of the six leadership styles by Daniel Goleman are right or wrong – each may be appropriate depending on the specific context. Whilst one of the more empathetic styles is most likely to be needed to build long-term commitment, there will be occasions when a commanding style may need to be called upon, for example, when a rapid and decisive response is required.

America is currently facing a crisis of leadership in business and in government. Yet at the same time – participation in leadership seminars and programs has never been higher. The leadership industry, with many of  its roots in America, is now a $50 billion industry. 

 

Kellerman explains that the current state of leadership is no better understood or produced than it was 40 years ago and that followers are becoming more and more disenchanted by those who are leading them.


Though the leadership industry thrives, leadership in practice is declining in performance.

Leadership has been changing for some time, but not uniformly. It is not readily evident in education that hierarchy is a thing of the past. What this means is that we are educating children and youth in a model that theorists think is passe. No wonder we have a crisis. Practice and theory are not separate, they are fused.

I believe happiness is intrinsic. Material possession can bring happiness, yet it is short term. Here is an interesting article backed up by science. Note it includes exercise. A great way to cope is excercise and it releases endorphines.
