Another major new combatant is entering Winnipeg's increasingly competitive grocery store sector, although shoppers will likely have to wait at least a year for a chance to check it out.Vancouver-based Save-On-Foods, which is part of the Jim Pattison Group of companies, confirmed Monday it will become the new anchor tenant in the Northgate Shopping Centre at 1399 McPhillips St.Company spokeswoman Julie Dickson Olmstead said the company will take over a large chunk of the former Zellers space in the mall, with the goal of having the store open for business by the fall of 2016.There were media reports Monday that Save-On-Foods will open a store in the Bridgwater Forest development in southwest Winnipeg.

An official announcement is expected Tuesday, but all signs point to the Vancouver-based "upscale family dining" operator to move into a 7,000-square-foot space in the recently opened Alt Hotel.

The two-thirds vacant Graham Avenue Tower has proven to be a $200,000 a month liability for the city and officials say it is going to cost the city millions more if they want to sell it.
Marc Pittet, the city’s acting director of property and development, told reporters on Thursday after the city’s finance committee meeting that selling or leasing the tower will be nearly impossible without “millions” invested in refurbishing the building.

True North Sports & Entertainment is exercising its option to buy the former Carlton Inn site from Winnipeg’s downtown development agency.
True North spokesman Scott Brown announced today the Winnipeg company will proceed with its option to buy 220 Carlton St. from CentreVenture, which purchased the former hotel site for $6.6 million and later demolished it.

The Toronto developer behind the proposed 47-storey SkyCity Centre condo tower has acquired the neighbouring St. Regis Hotel property with the intention of building a 625-stall parking structure and commercial /retail complex on the site.
The property’s current owner — CentreVenture Development Corporation — announced said today a numbered Manitoba company controlled by Fortress has purchased the building and an adjacent Smith Street parking lot for $4 million.

Manitoba had the biggest increase in retail sales in the country in March: StatsCan

Manitoba posted the biggest percentage increase in retail sales in the country in March, with sales up nearly two per cent from the previous month, Statistics Canada said today.
The agency said the province’s retailers reported $1.52 billion worth of sales for the month.
