Romney Campaign Again Warns Of ‘Soviet’ Threat

Romney Campaign Again Warns Of ‘Soviet’ Threat | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

The Romney campaign has been accused of being stuck in the 1950s. But it also seems mired in the 1980s — it again invoked Cold War threats on Thursday, as it tried to attack the Obama administration on foreign policy.

Romney and his surrogates have revealed an ongoing Cold War fixation. Former Reagan Navy Secretary John Lehman and former Bush administration Ambassador Pierre Prosper, on Thursday derailed Romney messaging in a conference call with reporters by raising the specter of the “Soviet Union” and slamming Obama for not protecting Czechoslovakia — a country that was peacefully dissolved in 1993 and now exists as the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Ed. Note: You know, it may be just me, but after finding out that Reagan has Alzheimer's while he was in office (this according to his own son), I get really nervous when a presidential candidate wants us to fight wars and deal with issues with countries that haven't existed in decades.

Callous Choices in the House

Callous Choices in the House | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it
For months, House Republicans have been trying to wriggle out of the agreement they made in August that will force deep cuts in military spending. Now we know how they propose to do it: They will take tens of billions out of programs for the poorest Americans, particularly food stamps, along with health care for the middle class.

WATCH: Tennessee Representative Says Bad Parenting, Not Bullying, Leads Teens To Suicide

WATCH: Tennessee Representative Says Bad Parenting, Not Bullying, Leads Teens To Suicide | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

A Tennessee-based lawmaker raised more than a few eyebrows this week after suggesting that children who were committing suicide were doing so because they "were not instilled the proper principles" at home.

"We can’t continue to legislate everything," he said in his speech. "We’ve had some horrible things happen in America and in our state, and there’s children that have actually committed suicide, but I will submit to you today that they did not commit suicide because of somebody bullying them. They committed suicide because they were not instilled the proper principles of where their self-esteem came from at home."

Faison continued, "Now, instead of sending children to the principal's audience, we're sending them to the criminal court...there's people in this room right here who, at one time in their life, were a bully. But you didn't grow up to be a bad person."

Ed. Note: So, the person that commits assault isn't really a bad guy even if his harrassment ultimately causes the victim to commit suicide.  It's really the fault of the victim's parents.  This is one seriously sick legislator and I suspect that he realizes that he could have had a criminal record if he'd done what he did now.

The Weight

The Weight | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

In Bible study, I remember being impressed by a specific command from Jesus from Matthew 6:5-6. Not a request, not a suggestion, not a hint, but a flat-out command: "Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you."

And my Father, who sees in secret, will reward me. Well, thanks a lot, Dad, for rewarding me with this hideous, necrotic 21st century version of Christianity...you know, the version that has little if anything to do with what You tried to tell us in those four friendly books at the beginning of the New Testament. Do Unto Others has been replaced with Do Others In The Throat, and as far as prayer in secret so as not to be a hypocrite, well...have You seen CNN and Fox lately? They're praying all over the place, all the time, around the clock...but for war, death, punishment, and the castigation and flagellation of anyone who dares to, as You said in John 13:34, "Love one another, as I have loved you."

Yup, I'm talking about the "hommasexchulls" among us, the ones deprived of The Light Of American Jesus because of their sinful, sodomic ways. I can quote Exodus and Leviticus at you until your eyes bleed, two books that are wildly popular with this country's curious breed of Jesus-shouter...except Jesus came along to make sure four new books got written, right? The ones with all the loving lessons I learned at my grandmother's knee, right?

Long-time Truthout readers know that I am a survivor of bullying. Well, it turns out that some of the stars of modern American Christianity have gathered their forces to blunt any state or local push to stop bullying in schools. Some of these festering, pestiferous frauds have even gone so far as to craft a prayer to God, so that He will intercede on their behalf to thwart laws that would keep LGBTQI kids from being harried to such an extreme degree that they commit suicide rather than face another day in the warm bath of American Christianity. Those kids kill themselves all the time nowadays, thanks to the endless and barbaric harassment they endure from Christians...just as Jesus intended?

My favorite part of that is the way they put "bully" in quotation marks, as if crucifying Matthew Shepard on a fence in Wyoming was only kinda-sorta "bullying," instead of flat-out assault and murder. According to those who crafted that abomination of a prayer, Shepard's killers were just American Christians attempting to save a soul...oh, and the exclamation point after "God's judgment" at the end of that so-called prayer is just a nudge in the...um...proper direction. Direction? I should have said Way.

It is brutally hard to be a Christian in America these days. Some of us Christians take that bit about doing unto the least of us deeply, deeply seriously. Some of us Christians think that it is wrong, sinful, and in fact a brazen form of Apartheid to deny certain Americans the rights enjoyed by other Americans based upon who they love. Mostly, some of us think Christianity in America has gone barking-mad insane.

Ed. Note:  It's Christians like William Rivers Pitt that remind me what real followers of Christ are like and that the haters, the bullies and the bigots are, as Bill Maher aptly puts it, merely auditing.

The trial of John Edwards continued yesterday with testimony from an aide who claimed the former Democratic Senator and ex- Presidential hopeful had a cute nickname for his former sex partner and the mother of his child —crazy slut. And boy did that crazy slut love spending campaign money. Love is so beautiful and precious, you guys.

Ed. Note: Never let it be said that I'm not willing to post negative articles if someone on the left has done wrong.  Edwards could have done a lot of good in the world.  It's a shame he ended up a sleaze.  He needs to man up and take responsibility for his actions.

Private Prison Corporations Are Modern Day Slave Traders

Private Prison Corporations Are Modern Day Slave Traders | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

The nation’s largest private prison company, the Corrections Corporation of America, is on a buying spree. With a war chest of $250 million, the corporation, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, earlier this year sent letters to 48 states, offering to buy their prisons outright. To ensure their profitability, the corporation insists that it be guaranteed that the prisons be kept at least 90 percent full. Plus, the corporate jailers demand a 20-year management contract, on top of the profits they expect to extract by spending less money per prisoner.

Ed. Note:  Exactly how do you guarantee it will be kept 90% full?

Corporate Cash Hoarding Holds Back Job Creation

Corporate Cash Hoarding Holds Back Job Creation | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

Since the Wall Street financial crisis, the largest U.S. non-financial corporations have amassed record levels of cash. But rather than investing these cash hoards to expand their operations and create jobs, many companies have shed workers in the United States.

At the end of 2011, the largest non-financial companies in the S&P 500 Index had accumulated more than $1 trillion in cash, a historic high.

Corporate cash was up 66 percent from the end of 2007, before the Wall Street financial crisis.

This comes at a time when the U.S. unemployment rate has exceeded 8 percent and more than 12 million Americans are looking for jobs. While overall employment at S&P 500 Index companies has grown since 2007, cash stockpiles have grown even faster.

Most of this job creation has been overseas. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. parents of multinational companies cut a total of 864,000 jobs between 1999 and 2009, while their foreign affiliates added 2.9 million jobs.

Romney small donors (or lack thereof)

Romney small donors (or lack thereof) | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

When the Romney campaign released its March fundraising numbers, it noted that "84% of all donations received through the end of March were $250 or less" -- which seemed to suggest that a sizable amount of its money is coming from grassroots donors.

While the percentage the campaign cites is correct, it doesn't illustrate the role small donors play in the campaign's overall fundraising. A closer look at the numbers reveals that in fact, a majority of Romney's money has come from people who donated the maximum amount of $2,500 -- 64% through March, according to the Campaign Finance Institute (CFI).

We had the CFI crunch the numbers for $250 and they found just 11% of Romney's cash has come from contributions of $250 or less. When you compare this to his rival, the CFI found 49% of the President's fundraising has come from donors who gave $250 or less.

How Republicans Will Twist Today's GDP Figures to Push Their BS Austerity Campaign.

It’s a point that needs to be raised and repeated so long as neo-Hooverism persists: austerity is its own punishment; it hasn’t boosted growth in Europe, and it won’t boost growth here. If you want smaller government as an end in itself, fine, just say so. But don’t call it an economic growth strategy, because it’s not one.

99% Power Movement Kicks Off With Massive Actions at Wells Fargo Shareholder Meeting | | AlterNet

99% Power Movement Kicks Off With Massive Actions at Wells Fargo Shareholder Meeting | | AlterNet | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

2012 will be different than last spring, and the spring before it. This year, there’s a nationally coordinated effort of the 99% to fight back.

We are diverse, but united in our demands: Wells Fargo and other big corporations must pay their fair share of taxes. Too many of the nation’s biggest corporations actually make money at tax time. One hundred of the Fortune 500’s most profitable companies got average tax refunds of two percent.

· Corporations like Wells Fargo should start funding the future, not fossil fuels, payday lending and private prisons. Wells Fargo is a major funder of the payday loan industry that preys on cash-strapped working families. It provides credit to six of the seven largest publicly traded payday lenders in the country which finance nearly a third of the payday lending industry.

"Aggressive" TSA Pat-Down of 7-Year-Old with Cerebral Palsy Forces Family to Miss Flight

"Aggressive" TSA Pat-Down of 7-Year-Old with Cerebral Palsy Forces Family to Miss Flight | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

Airport security screenings are a singularly harrowing ordeal for 7-year-old Dina Frank, who suffers from cerebral palsy and requires crutches and leg braces to move around. Compound that with the fact that Dina is developmentally disabled, and the need for care and sensitivity on the part of TSA agents becomes that much greater.

As her medical aids require her to submit to a physical pat-down, Dina's mom Marcy attempts to alleviate her daughter's anxiety by asking agents to introduce themselves. But the TSOs on duty this past Monday "were exceptionally aggressive," according to Dina's dad, Dr. Joshua Frank.

After he began recording footage of the screening with his iPhone, one of the agents "started screaming at me and cursing me and threatening me," he told The Daily.

A supervisor had determined that a simple inspection of Dina's crutches would be sufficient, but the call was later reversed by a manager, who ordered that Dina be returned to the security area for a full pat-down.

Wells Fargo, Terrified to Face Victims of Its Foreclosure Fraud and Predatory Lending, Locks Shareholders Out of Annual Meeting | Occupy Wall Street | AlterNet | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it
On March 24, Wells Fargo, assisted by dozens of Bay Area police, took the unprecedented step of locking more than 100 of its shareholders out of its annual meeting – a meeting they had every legal right to attend.

These shareholders had a story to tell, and Wells' Chairman and CEO John Stumpf was not in a listening mood. They'd purchased stock in the bailed-out Wall Street giant, and then travelled from around the country to tell the board how its corporate citizenship gad ruined lives and wrought profound economic pain on entire communities.

ALEC Says It Plans To Craft Legislation To Take Down State Renewable Energy Targets

ALEC Says It Plans To Craft Legislation To Take Down State Renewable Energy Targets | Wings and Weights | Scoop.it

Two leading conservative political organizations say they are stepping up coordinated efforts to repeal state-level renewable energy targets.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) — a “stealth business lobbyist” that works with corporate interests to help them write and implement “model” legislation — says it may soon start crafting laws designed to kill or weaken state targets for renewable electricity, heating and fuels.
ALEC has come under fire in recent weeks for its support of voter ID laws and the controversial Stand-Your-Ground law that opponents blame for the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. After progressive groups began an aggressive campaign to educate the public about ALEC, 13 companies have since pulled their membership from the organization.

Last July, Bloomberg News acquired tax documents showing that Koch Industries, Exxon Mobil and other energy companies paid membership fees to ALEC in order to help write legislation repealing carbon pollution reduction programs in states around country.
