The Le Marche region has a lot to offer to wine lovers. There are 5 DOCG wines and 16 DOC wines. From the prestigious and famous Verdicchio, to the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, from the Offida Pecorino to the Offida Passerina. Also: Bianchello del Metauro, Colli Maceratesi, Colli Pesaresi, Esino, Falerio dei Colli Ascolani, I Terreni di Sanseverino, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba, Rosso Conero, Pergola, Rosso Piceno, San Ginesio Many of these wines are little known outside of Italy but visitors to the region have a pleasant surprise when they try the local wine produced by many small aziendas and cantinas.

Italian Wine: appellation system

Italian Wine: appellation system | Wines and People | Scoop.it

In 1963, the first official Italian system of classification of wine was launched. Since then, several modifications and additions to the legislation have been made (a major one in 1992), the last of which, in 2010, has established four basic categories, which are consistent with the last EU regulation in matter of wine (2008–09). The categories, from the bottom level to the top one, are: [...]

Mariano Pallottini's insight:

Marche (~3% DOC production) - Try refreshing and aromatic Verdicchio white wines. Marche (Mar-kay) is known for their aromatic white wines. Verdicchio is definitely the most common, but Pecorino (the white wine grape, not the cheese) is an extremely special find. Lacrima is an up-and-coming grape from this area making fruity fun wines that reminded us of Syrah.

Wines from the Marche: serious matter

Wines from the Marche: serious matter | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Wine is a serious matter in the Marche. There are roughly 14,200 estates in the region, working with about 17,000 hectares of vines. Although cooperatives do exist, wine production is very much a family affair. Roughly 80% of the Marche’s wines are DOC or DOCG, a fact that does not guarantee quality in and of itself (individual producer skill is important) but illustrates the region’s potential. In fact, the region is blessed with many high-quality native grape varieties and unique terroirs. Even better, the average level of quality is quite high, which means that finding a truly bad wine is difficult. A handful of overoaked and rustic reds are still being made, but for the most part the Marche’s wines deserve to be on shopping lists of wine lovers everywhere. [...]
