2014 Colle Stefano Verdicchio di Matelica
Verdicchio is a fragrant, generous white variety grown in the Marche, in central Italy, where it makes a wine of irresistible charm and vibrancy. This one is from Matelica, from hillside vineyards more inland than its other common DOC, Castelli di Jesi; the wine has a slightly cooler aspect, though it still gives off a scent of lemon zest and citrus blossom. The flavors are deeper, more toward tangerine, offset by a salty mineral tang. About $17 at the Wine House, Woodland Hills Wine Merchant and Wally's. [...]
The Los Angeles Times put Verdicchio di Matelica from Le Marche among the Italy's white wines to taste a sunny spring day
Andrea Felici 2014 Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi "Classico Superiore" from Marche ($17.99). The importer says... "Practicing organic viticulture, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. Grapes are harvested by hand, the clusters are gently placed in small boxes and the grapes are pressed within a few hours after they have been removed from the vine. Temperature controlled fermentation is achieved without oxygen. Certification-in conversion. The wine matures and mellow in cement and stainless steel vats for a period much longer than the minimum prescribed by regulations."
This has a rating of 91 points from Vinous Media (July 2015) with this review... "Medium straw-yellow. White flowers and almond dominate the nose. Enters the mouth juicy and fresh, then turns bigger and rounder, showing a suave, glyceral mouthfeel to the ripe apple and pear flavors. Laser-like acidity keep this wine light and lively on the palate. The finish is long and extremely saline. Drink: 2015-2019.
"Leopardo Felici has a great hand with the Verdicchio grape, producing two of the Marche's best white wines. Clearly, the vineyard location in the cool-climate, hilly area between Apiro and Cupramontana is a big help, as the wines have high natural acidity, a strong mineral overlay and wonderful clarity. But strong viticultural and winemaking skills also play a role. Felici is one of the few producer of 'vino biologico' in Italy talented enough to avoid making wines with off-putting aromas, and his decision not to use oak (only stainless steel and cement vats are used) also contributes to the precision of the wines. Wine is a serious matter in the Marche. There are roughly 14,200 estates in the region, working with about 17,000 hectares of vines. Although cooperatives do exist, wine production is very much a family affair. Roughly 80% of the Marche’s wines are DOC or DOCG, a fact that does not guarantee quality in and of itself (individual producer skill is important) but illustrates the region’s potential. In fact, the region is blessed with many high-quality native grape varieties and unique terroirs. Even better, the average level of quality is quite high, which means that finding a truly bad wine is difficult.
