Marchetti Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico, Marches, Italy

Marchetti Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico, Marches, Italy | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Winemaker Maurizio Marchetti is an avid painter. With a particular love for the work of Renaissance painter Botticelli (“Don’t we all, darling!”), this particular bottle bears Botticelli’s Venus.
Marchetti is known to be extremely picky about the grapes he chooses to go into his wines. What’s new there, since that’s what EVERY winery in the world claims!?!?

That’s very true, but not every winemaker in the world has a cardiologist for a wife!
That’s right! Maurizio Marchetti is the brains behind this operation, but since his wife is a heart surgeon, he can afford to be a little-more selective about the grapes he uses. So-much-so, that he sometimes produces as little as a half bottle of wine per vine! [...]

Le Marche Wine in the US Market | Sartarelli Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Classico 2013 | Wines and People | Scoop.it

This wine is soft but has a nice crisp acidity with enticing opulent tannins and amazing aromas. The light fruit flavors blend well with the lemongrass tones that drink in total harmony; the balance of minerality and flavor enhance the wines texture and bouquet.
Drinking this wine is a treat and shows the style and grace that the grape Verdicchio is known for. [...]

The land of Verdicchio wine

The land of Verdicchio wine | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Verdicchio is a very tipical wine in Le Marche region. A tour in its land is a mix of food, relaxing landscapes, historical cities and, of course, very good wine.

There are two kinds of Verdicchio: the Verdicchio of Matelica, made in the Macerata’s province around the Matelica city, and the most famous Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, made further north in the province of Ancona. [...]

Le Marche Wines: A Full-blooded Verdicchio

Le Marche Wines: A Full-blooded Verdicchio | Wines and People | Scoop.it

I visited this winery a few years ago when it was winter. After sampling their wines from their vats, the whole Sartarelli family treated me to a wonderful meal in the winery. I intend to return, this time perhaps in spring, to taste again their Verdicchio wines, each with a different personality.

The Santarelli estate produces three basic Verdicchio wines, this stock wine, Tralivio and their unusual  Balciana (at times, nature permitting, made with grapes with Botrytis cinerea. They also produce a Verdicchio passito dessert wine and a bubbly. This has a bouquet of menthol, aromatic herbs, green apple, citrus peel and a typical note of anise. The mouthfeel is young but promising, with a copious acidity and a characteristic almond and pungent finish.

Pontemagno 2013 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico

Pontemagno 2013 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico | Wines and People | Scoop.it

This is a terrific wine at a terrific price which kept very well in the fridge overnight, losing very little of its delicate but definite aroma. It has a slight floral note but the main aromas and flavours are citrus and almond and something I'd describe as stony, which is part of the texture - a fine and slight dry firmness which adds both interest and length of flavour. I don't think I have ever used the term 'lip-smacking' to describe a wine but this one qualifies thanks to the crisp lemony taste. Good with or without food.
The Verdicchio grapes come from the hilly area behind Jesi, particularly close to San Paolo di Jesi, a village about 35 km south west of Ancona in Italy's Marche region. Winemaking is straightforward, the fruit gently and slowly pressed and then fermented in stainless steel. My only cavil was the plastic closure, which was very difficult to squeeze back into the bottle, unlike many of the newer breed of synthetic closures. [...]

The wines are the products of irreproachable skill and it could only be so given that they are made under the supervision of a top professional like enologist Luigi Lorenzetti. Here skill is means translating in the clearest and truest way possible the variety of the grape and the land where it grows. They are wines for ‘connoisseurs’ in the truest sense. Le Marche Wines: 2013 Luciano Landi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi

Le Marche Wines: 2013 Luciano Landi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Off the beaten path, literally and figuratively, the 2013 Luciano Landi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi hails from the little known and lightly traveled Le Marche, a land of charming villages and farms dotting rolling hills, craggy hillsides, sandy beaches, and great terroir. Humid ocean breezes bring soft roundness to the wines, and calcareous clay soil lends acidity.

Luciano Landi’s Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is a strikingly full-bodied complex white-- fermented in stainless steel followed by 6 months bottle aging, this wine is layered with notes of juicy, golden apples, fresh herbs, citrus, wet stone, and fragrant white flowers.

Incredibly aromatic, the pale straw color in the glass hints at the layers of juicy, golden apples, honeysuckle, citrus and wet stone to come. Full-bodied, complex, and perfectly balanced, with a lift of acidity, it's food's new best friend. [...]

Le Marche Wine Reviews: 2012 Fattoria Laila, "Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi", Italian White | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Winery: Fattoria Laila

Vintage: 2012

Wine Name/Vineyard: "Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi"

Wine Category: Italian White

Grape blend: 100% Verdicchio

Region: Le Marche

State or country: Italy

Price: $10

KWG Score: 90.3 (based on 3 reviews)

Ken's Wine Rating: Very Good (89)

This light yellow colored Verdicchio from Italy is a steal at $10! It opens with a green apple and Anjou pear like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, quite lively and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is a mineral influenced green apple with notes of almond, quinine, and a touch of lime. The finish is dry and its flavors linger for quite some time. This wine was made for shellfish. I would have it with linguine and clams or bay scallops with a white wine garlic broth or Coquilles St. Jacques. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: Colour: Bright straw yellow with greenish reflections. Bouquet: Delicate, with a slight fragrance of wild flowers. Taste: Dry and smoothly with a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is best enjoyed young at 10-11° C Food suggestion: Aperitifs, starters and fish.

Garofoli Macrina 2012, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore, Marche (pronounced “mar-kay”). 100% verdicchio grapes. Very pale gold color; vibrant, savory, saline, crisp and dry; lilac and heather, lemon and lemon balm, notes of grapefruit peel, lemongrass and chalk; deliciously seductive, with silky medium body and supple texture; a few moments in the glass bring in hints of anise, lavender and limestone; surprising detail and dimension for the price. Fazi Battaglia: since 1949, quality wines from Le Marche

Fazi Battaglia: since 1949, quality wines from Le Marche | Wines and People | Scoop.it

The Fazi Battaglia vineyard estate is located in the town of Cupramontana, in the Castelli di Jesi Classico area in the Le Marche region of central Italy. It sits just 31 miles southwest of the Adriatic Sea and 50 miles southwest of the capital city of Ancona. In 1949, Francesco Angelini, a multifaceted entrepreneur with a passion for the countryside and a vision for quality, boldly planted the first estate-grown Verdicchio in the Marche region and named it Fazi Battaglia. Since 1990, the estate has been managed by the 4th generations of the Sparaco and Giannotti families.

Fazi Battaglia strongly believes and supports environmental sustainability and quality viticulture. They do this through adhering to strict regulations, Magis protocol, and precision farming which means doing only what is needed, where and when it is needed. As a result, in early 2014, the winery was recognized and awarded the ECO-FRIENDLY winery by Vini Buoni d”Italia for supporting the environment and sustainability in the Vineyards and in the Cellars.

The estate is comprised of 12 single vineyards managed by Mirco Pompili. Dino Porfiri and Consulting Winemaker Franco Bernabei make the wine. With this dynamic team, Fazi Battaglia has reached global recognition, setting the benchmark for Marche wine production. Every parcel of vineyard land has been studied to determine the ideal varietal and clone to plant for fruit of the highest quality.

Le Marche Wines on the UK Market | Verdicchio: Wine that work with seafood | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Acidic wines have the sharpness and zest to bring out all the flavour of seafood.

Barone Pizzini Pievalta Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore, Italy 2013 (£10.25, Vintage Roots) There is usually a fine-line of acidity in the white wines made from the verdicchio grape in the Marches region of central Italy, too, the snap of green apple that makes them the seafood wine of choice in this area of Italy, whether produced in the Matelica area or near to the town of Jesi, just inland from the city of Ancona. In the case of this refined example from the relatively small, organic and biodynamic verdicchio specialist Pievalta, however, you wouldn't really say acidity was the defining character: while it teases and tingles and matches wonderfully with grilled fish, it also has notes of fennel, almond and ripe pear.

Le Marche Wines in the Canadian Market | Cantorí Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2012

Le Marche Wines in the Canadian Market | Cantorí Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2012 | Wines and People | Scoop.it

This wine was made from organically grown Verdicchio grapes, where the vines struggle for nutrients and water on slopes with a 20-30 degree incline, facing Northeastern/northwestern sun exposure. The vineyard is a hilly terrain of calcareous clay, at an elevation of 1,200 ft ABL. Grapes are hand harvested and yields are low at about 2.5 tons/acre, which shows in the concentration and power of the fruit on the palate. The grapes are left on the vine until they are almost over-ripe (some are even botrytis-affected), then hand-harvested and placed in small, 20 kg boxes. The utmost care is taken to harvest only the ripest fruit and therefore several passes through the vineyards are required. Vinified and aged in temperature-controlled tanks maturing in stainless steel tank until the wine is almost fully dry. 3 months ageing in bottle before release.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright yellow. Complex nose of mineral, apple, bosc pear, oyster shell, honey, almond skin, cabbage (seems like some botrytis but apparently none in this vintage). Palate is a touch off-dry, medium bodied, balanced despite the high acid and high alcohol. Incredible texture with white peaches, ripe pear and a long, mineral finish.

Review: There’s a distinctive late harvest-like richness here; the nose is powerful and ripe, full of custard pear, vanilla-poached pear, succulent ripe white peach and plenty of honeyed nuances, while the palate is viscous and dense, with a vague impression of sweetness firmed up by a streak of acids and a certain stony-mineral note. Terrific length and depth - a verdicchio of real stature and class.  [...]

Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi - Punchy italian white that represents good value

Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi - Punchy italian white that represents good value | Wines and People | Scoop.it

One of the many pleasures of travelling around Europe is the wines you find which you don't see much of at home. Or more likely, just hadn't looked at much.
This Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi 2009 I discovered in a restaurant in Prague after much googling of the wine list to match something with seafood.
I know almost nothing about the region, or didn't until I read a few articles, but this is a wine I would advise checking out.
It's not for the faint hearted though.
Here are my tasting notes from last night:
Dry, rich, reminiscent of bone dry white bugundy but with a focus that feels Italian. Restrained nose. The age of this 2009 is coming through. Strong acid, zero citrus/lemon (hooray)
Slightly off bitter finish. High alcohol at 14.5 which adds to the texture, but you wouldn't know it was quite that much unless you checked. Definitely a palate cleanser but also so much more than that, lots of complexity. [...]

Founded in 1971, the cooperative who make this wine are today the largest producer of Verdicchio in Matelica, a small commune in Italy's Marche region. Located inland of Jesi, its more famous neighbour, Matelica lies at higher altitudes yet experiences a warmer climate.
A pale lemon colour, suggesting lightness and youth. The nose offers hints of acacia honey against a backdrop of citrus fruit. Dry and crisp, with a persistent finish.
Try this with the lightly spiced fish and seafood of the Adriatic coast.

Aging Gracefully | Aged stunning Italian white wines

Aging Gracefully | Aged stunning Italian white wines | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Most Italian white wines are cheap, cheerful and made to be consumed during the first year after the harvest. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it’s also the case for the majority of whites made around the world.
Nevertheless, Italy produces a number of stunning white wines that develop depth and complexity as they age. Here are some of my favorites.

  • VerdicchioBasic Verdicchios are crafted for immediate drinking, but riservas from the Verdicchio Classico region and some wines from the Verdicchio di Matelica denomination can evolve for years. The most famous cellarworthy bottling, Bucci’s Verdicchio Classico Riserva named Villa Bucci, is made from 50-year-old vines and aged in large Slavonian oak casks. The Italian-born Verdicchio grape was another of Bonné’s spring-time wine selections recommending this 2012 vintage from Bisci.

He said: “Of Verdicchio’s two appellations – Castelli di Jesi is the other – Matelica is higher and farther inland from the Adriatic, capable of a more powerful, ripe wine. Still, this is about fresh, seaside flavors: fresh lime, sea salt and sorrel, and shows no end of ripe fruit.”

Bucci, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classico, Superiore, Ostra Vetere, Marche, Italy, 2011, 13.5% abv | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is a DOC located in the Marche province of Italy on the country’s east coast. It’s located north of Abruzzo province and south of Emilia Romagna.
About 30 km inland from the town of Ancona, it is heavily affected by the Adriatic Sea’s cooling evening breezes that offer the area a strong diurnal shift; the difference between day and nighttime temperatures enables the grapes to retain high acidity and the wines to be crisp and refreshing.
This wine comes from the Classico zone. There is another Verdicchio zone – de Matelica which is further inland, has higher altitude and offers a fuller style of wine. [...]
