Ciu Ciu Oris Falerio: Trebbiano, Passerina, Pecorino

Ciu Ciu Oris Falerio: Trebbiano, Passerina, Pecorino | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Very attractive nose, luscious front palate with lots of white summer fruits, crisp acidity on the finish with a lovely freshness.

The Marche on Italy's Adriatic coast is better than most regions at offering great value Italian wine, delivering both personality and value in reds and whites. It is in areas like this I am delighted to meet winemakers like the Bartolomei family.

They are firmly committed to tradition and making wine that represents their terroir-that unique and inimitable combination of soil, microclimate, aspect and local environmental factors which sets one place apart from another. Natalino Bartolomei started the estate in 1970, calling it Ciu Ciu in memory of his father, who worked on the railroads-it really is as it sounds!

Now, his sons Walter and Massimiliano continue their father's work, keeping at the core of their philosophy quality and respect for the land. This regard for tradition explains the lovely range of local, indigenous grape varieties grown here, a pure joy in a world awash with predictable medioctity.

White Marche Wines: Not Just Verdicchio

White Marche Wines: Not Just Verdicchio | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Maybe it is just a coincidence, but here I am writing for the first time about Marche wines other than Verdicchio and my bulldog, whose name is Verdicchio, is a little nervous. But he has no reason to be jealous because my love for that wine is eternal. The fact is a proper journalist cannot ignore white wines that are rapidly gaining popularity among wine lovers, those made from Passerina, Pecorino and Trebbiano grapes, both single-grape wines and blended ones. Wines that owe much of their success to the recent, very strong interest in indigenous grapes, for which Italy is undoubtedly the world leader. Unfortunately, many here apparently have not understood this and seem to be doing everything possible not to invest in them as much as they should. In order to understand this reality I needed Virgil who could guide me though the sweet hills of Piceno in search of those small producers who over the past decade have dedicated themselves to making wine from these grapes. Passerina the perfumed white wine of Le Marche

Passerina the perfumed white wine of Le Marche | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Le Marche, a Region in central Italy, makes incredible wines that from some years are conquering National and International Appreciation and Recognition. One of the most known wines of Le Marche is the Passerina, a white wine mainly produced in the Ascoli Piceno province in the south of the Marche region.

Translated the noun “Passerina” in Italian means “little sparrow”,  a tiny, hardy, lively bird, with a nimble grace that allows it to make a place for itself in the world.

The passerina grape variety has ancient tradition of cultivation in Southern Le Marche that represent the Passerina's Heartland and a fair number of patches and pockets of the vine grow in vineyards scattered around northeastern Lazio, and northern Abruzzo as well.

Actually the Passerina, in Southern Le Marche, it has been always used as component of the DOC Wine, Falerio Dei Colli Ascolani, in 10 - 30% together with Trebbiano and only from 10 - 15 years, thanks to the vinification progress has been understood the great potential of a withe wine with Passerina in purity.

Passerina grapes, once called "pagadebito" (pay-debt) are relatively small but produce wines with high levels of perfumes, acidity and sugars which give a very clear, balanced wine, perfect for serving with fish dishes and poultry.

Aged only in steel tanks, this has very good acidity and offers a great deal of character for its moderate pricing

The wine is characteristically dry with aromas of flowers, wild herbs, almonds, dried pear, orange blossom and biscuit, this has lovely texture and a rich finish with a note of honey.

Increasingly popular with wine lovers both in Italy and the UK where you can try it at Osteria dell'Arancio or Rosso di Sera Restaurants in London.

All the vineyards are farmed organically. The Rosso Piceno is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Montepulciano and collects its thoughts in large old oak for a few months prior to bottling.

Yes that was it! The wine....Déjà V by Domodimonti... A Passerina 2009 vintage.... What a refreshing feeling came over me with a simple sip. The chilled slightly sweet texture took me out of the summer heat and placed me onto a wooden patio with cool breezes blowing, overlooking the rolling waters.......

Déjà V by Domodimonti:

  • Appelation - Offida, White, Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)
  • Grape varieties - Passerina
  • Colour - Pale yellow with green highlights.
  • Bouquet - Pleasing nose of citronella, baked apples and pears.
  • Taste - The mouth is suave and gives the impression of residual sugar related to the special texture of the Passerina variety. Rich and silky with good persistence marked by the well ripened white fruit. Serve at 10°C.

Whites take center stage in this region of Italy
... Cesare Mondavi, who founded one of the greatest wineries in the world in California, left Marche some hundred years ago. Change came slowly, though without destroyng the essential beauty of the Marche hinterland and during the summer sun-lovers from northern Europe take up most of the coast. However, as is the case with all 20 Italian regions, Marche now produces plenty of interesting wines, and these too have been gaining a reputation as more than just a simple crisp drop to go with the fish dishes that abound here. Most famous of all are its white Verdicchio wines, especially from the Castelli di Jesi and Matelica inland from Ancona.... Newer production methods of lighter cropping and later harvesting give the wine a greater fruitiness. Other whites worth noting are two very newly rediscovered varieties Pecorino (nothing to do with cheese) and Passerina.
Red plays very much second fiddle in this part of the world, though of course there are some notable exceptions, notably the Rosso Conero, taking its name from the lofty Monte Conero massif loomimg over the city of Ancona, and Rosso Piceno [...]

Passerina: A white like a little sparrow

Passerina: A white like a little sparrow | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Loosely translated, the noun, or rather proper noun “Passerina” in Italian means “little sparrow”. And indeed the more you get to know this charming grape, the more you begin to understand how well the moniker suits the vine to which it’s applied, but first a little back ground on this rare bird…

  • La Murola Passerina Marche IGT 2010  Slightly greenish, pale white gold color. Pretty but subtlely sassy nose of cooked grain, apricot jam, white pepper, citrus peel, hazelnut, and dried white flowers. The wine’s entry on the palate is fresh and lively, but with a clean, corpulent rich texture, and complex and evolving flavors of woody herbs, pear, yellow cherry nectar, minerals, and quinine. Pretty, lingering flavors of peach pit and caramel flan on the finish.

Grapes have been grown for centuries in this area and therefore there is a well consolidated tradition of vines suitable to the local soil and climate
The principal vines cultivated in the area are Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Passerina and Pecorino.
