Au Natural: The Wines of Domodimonti

Au Natural: The Wines of Domodimonti | Wines and People | Scoop.it

The Marches, or Le Marche as the Italians call it, sits on the east coast of Italy, where the Adriatic sea breeze blows off the water and up the many river valleys, reaching as far inland as the Apennine Mountains. With soil rich in clay, calcium, and limestone, Le Marche makes a wonderful home to over 60,000 acres of grape vines. And, of course, with a winemaking tradition that predates Rome, it is no wonder that a land like this can produce such memorable wines. Sandwiched between Emilia-Romagna to the north and Abruzzi to the south, and with Umbria in its backyard, the Marches is best known for its vibrant, mineral-rich whites and lighter yet savory reds. Mariano Pallottini's insight:

2010 Domodimonti, ‘Picens’ Marche Rosso IGT, Marche, Italy $20
A supple and forgiving Marche Rosso made from a blend of four grapes – Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon – matured for six months in French barriques and another half year in bottle. Expressive aromas of blackberries and currants waft from the glass, complemented superbly by an ample, elegant body and a lingering smooth tannin reminiscent of suede. This wine will really shine alongside a grilled tuna steak or roasted pork loin.

Do you like sulfates in your wines?

No one does ...

Last night at Eataly (the new Italian food specialty megastore in Manhattan) I discovered Domodimonti, a boutique winery located on the picturesque countryside of Montefiore dell'Aso, in Le Marche Region, Italy. In addition to Domodimonti we tasted other specialty items from Marche, as well as fabulous Amaro digestifs from Varnelli.

Solo Per Te , Marche Rosso I.G.T, Domodimonti

Solo Per Te , Marche Rosso I.G.T, Domodimonti | Wines and People | Scoop.it

The attack on the palate is tannic and delicate. The wine is well structured on strong tannins but without any roughness. The long and persistent finale reminds us of the chocolaty, almost licorice accents. Color is deep ruby red with bouquets of red berry jam, wood, leather and dark chocolate.

Discovering Domodimonti Natural Wines from the Marche at Eataly NYC

Discovering Domodimonti Natural Wines from the Marche at Eataly NYC | Wines and People | Scoop.it

The winery was located at Montefiore dell’Aso in the Marche. It is  not a certified organic winery but a “natural” winery. What makes it “natural” is that the grapes are sustainable-grown using organic matter, low–yielding vineyards and the grapes are hand picked. No sugar is added to the wine. There is a strict selection of yeast and there are no additives made for color, acidity, mouth-feel, etc. The addition of sulfites is kept to a minimum and they use of state-of-the-art technology.

The new winery built in 2010 was designed to generate the least amount of visual and ecological impact on the land.

Déjà V Domodimonti - Passerina 2009 - Was It Déjà Vu?

Déjà V Domodimonti - Passerina 2009 - Was It Déjà Vu? | Wines and People | Scoop.it

Yes that was it! The wine....Déjà V by Domodimonti... A Passerina 2009 vintage.... What a refreshing feeling came over me with a simple sip. The chilled slightly sweet texture took me out of the summer heat and placed me onto a wooden patio with cool breezes blowing, overlooking the rolling waters.......

Déjà V by Domodimonti:

  • Appelation - Offida, White, Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)
  • Grape varieties - Passerina
  • Colour - Pale yellow with green highlights.
  • Bouquet - Pleasing nose of citronella, baked apples and pears.
  • Taste - The mouth is suave and gives the impression of residual sugar related to the special texture of the Passerina variety. Rich and silky with good persistence marked by the well ripened white fruit. Serve at 10°C.
