Red wine and cola? Calimocho

Red wine and cola? Calimocho | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Many moons ago, in my youth, it was the pre-night club drink of choice among my peers. Red wine and cola, colloquially known a Calimocho, is being targeted by Spodee with a fortified red wine designed for mixing.

The article compares it to depression-era wine, but personally I think it's more like desperation era marketing.

What do you think? Fizzy water, sugar and caffeine anybody??? Surely that would never take off.

Another producer abandons screwcap

Another producer abandons screwcap | Wine in the World | Scoop.it
A leading Australian winery has returned to cork after five years of "persistent quality control issues" using screwcaps.

Rusden Wines is abandoning screwcap for cork citing bottle variation, 'sweaty' characteristics and reductive notes. In plain terms they just think that screwcaps are bad for their unfilitered craft wines.

They follow a short, but notable, list of wineries returning to cork. Maybe the tree farmers of Portugal will enjoy a new revival?

Climate and night temperature

Chilean, Spanish and Australians scientists participate in a joint investigation to analyze the effects of climate change on viticulture.

The Vineyard of the Future projectis a collaboration between the University of Talca, University of La Rioja, Spain, and University of Adelaide. It will analyse the effects of climate change on both day and night temperatures and look at how these influence vines and wines.

Without work like this or wine supplies might dry up, quite literally.

Tesco to sell Lafite

Tesco to sell Lafite | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Fancy dropping £600+ on a bottle of wine at the local supermarket.

Tesco are launching a Clubcard boosting range of premium fine wines including £600+ a bottle Château Lafite.

While it's great to hear that that a few UK high streets are going to be seeing this cracking range of wines it's tinged with disappointment that they'll be further squeezing wine producers by introducing more supermarket own-label wines. Why can't they just pick some decent wines from good producers and leave them in their original bottles?

Holland is no Champagne socialist

Holland is no Champagne socialist | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

In a shock move French president Francois Hollande has switched the bling-bling Champagne favoured by Sarkozy for more modest Muscadet.

He's not alone, with Muscadet being the tipple of choice for many rappers these days. Maybe he's more with it than commentators think?

It's a great way of saving a few €uros and there are plenty of great wines that cost a fraction of Champagne. OMG - is there a reverse wine snob in power??

Treasury 100% sustainable in California

Treasury 100% sustainable in California | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) has announced that all of it's Californinan vineyards have been certified as sustainable.

This is no small achievement. As the largest wine-only company in the world, it is admirable that they're pushing sustainable farming practices so effectively. If anybody wants proof that you can be good to the land, and to your product, without busting the bank then this is it.

They've also admirably cut their energy consumption by around 20% over the past three years.

Did you know that they make wine in Thailand? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

As well as being Thailand's first qualified female winemaker, Nikki Lohitnavy is oenologist at her parents' GranMonte vineyard in Thailand.

This interview sheds some light on Nikki's background, motivation and what she's trying to achieve. She sounds like an interesting person to me.

I've never tried a Thai wine, but when I get the chance I will. I can imagine them producing a decent Viognier, with a lot of work.

New Zealand’s Best White Wines - Wine Enthusiast

New Zealand’s Best White Wines - Wine Enthusiast | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Wine Enthusiast has a good piece on New Zealand white wines. It's a little cliché ridden (Dog Point & Cloudy Bay for the Savvies), but there are some great picks in there too.

Personally I'm a big fan of Neudorf's Chardonnay and the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 3, which both made the list.

If you fancy trying something from Kiwi Land that doesn't smell of cat's pee then this could be a good guide.

French cows reared on fine wine - Telegraph

French cows reared on fine wine - Telegraph | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

French cows are enjoying up to two bottles of high quality wine every day as farmers attempt to produce the best beef in Europe.

With echoes of beer-fed Kobe beef, Vinbovin of France seems to be catching on with wealthy diners. These pampered cows produce a supposedly superior hunk of beef.

I'm not to sure about the chances of picking up notes of Muscat if they switch grapes, but maybe the cows will prefer the taste?

3,000-year-old wine unearthed in China | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Taking the concept of aging a wine to the extreme is a 3,000 year old bronze vessel unearthed in Shaanxi province, China.

OK, they don't actually know that there's wine inside the vessel, but that's what they're expecting. It's even under an acient Chinese equivalent of a screwcap, so maybe it'll be OK to drink?

Kilikanoon named Halliday's 2013 Australian Winery of the Year

Kilikanoon named Halliday's 2013 Australian Winery of the Year | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Established in 1997, Kilikanoon has been a rising star. Now it has reached the zenith of Australian awards: Halliday's winery of the year.

OK, 2012 may only be half-done, but that doesn't stop James doling out the 2013 awards. In terms of local influence, this Halliday gong is one of the most important.

I've never tried their wines, so I can't really comment on quality. I think it's time that they set up a Sydney tasting and maybe a London one too.

Congratulations to Kevin Mitchell and his team.

Guests are driven to the windowless venue from another meeting spot by two vans. Once seated their 22 banquet is matched with sound effects, light projections and wine (of course).

Our full sensual experience massively influences our experience of food and wine, so this sounds like the perfect way to enjoy an amazing meal.

I really want to eat here, it's just a little bit far from home. Anyone want to have a crack a doing a pop-up in Sydney along the same lines???

I've often thought that TetraPak and PET bottled wine is altered, but I've never really looked into it. Thankfully others are hard at work on the research and discovering how packaging really effects wine.
