Wine: confessions of a pinot noir addict

Wine: confessions of a pinot noir addict | Wine in the World | Scoop.it
'This is a bad frame of mind to have got into,' Fiona Beckett says, 'because good pinot is eye-wateringly expensive'
David Swaddle's insight:

The Guardian's Fiona Beckett 'fesses up to being pinot addict. Nothing wrong with that, I say.

All of a sudden addict turns dealer and she doles out a list of bargain pinot noirs to try with decent prices from UK suppliers.

Belinda Kemp and Emma Rice will take you through everything you need to know about setting up a vineyard in the UK. From buying land to dealing with Customs and Excise (or avoiding them) see to be covered.

I've not read it myself, but at only £10 I'm sure it's worthwhile for anybody thinking of giving grape growing a go.

Should 250ml glasses of wine go?

Should 250ml glasses of wine go? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jamie Goode, writing on the Wine Option website, suggests that the 250ml glass of wine should be scrapped.

I tend to agree. A glass that's a third of a bottle is simply too big. It doesn't fit in with the other drinks in a round in the pub and it stealthily gets people to consume more alcohol. It's bordering on irresponsible.

Seeing as a glass of pub wine has to hit a price point of £5-£7, I would much rather drink a glass half the size and three times the quality (double the price, treble the quality is a rule of mine). A 125ml glass at £5 would mean drinking a much better wine and consuming about the same alcohol as a beer drinker in the same round.

There's more on this on @bibendbumwines website: http://bibendum-times.co.uk/posts/news/2012/05/08/3-reasons-to-scrap-250ml-glasses-of-wine-in-the-on-trade/

Time to start a campaign??

Dave Stewart's Sweet Dreams

Dave Stewart's Sweet Dreams | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Following in the wake of AC/DC and Slayer, ex-Eurythmics muso David Stewart is releasing his own wine.

A re-bottling of Australian estate Mollydooker's "Carnival of Love Shiraz", the beardy one's wine is named "Ringmaster General", the same as the title of his new album.

At £78 a bottle, it's not going to be for your average MP3 buyer. Some would say it's a blatant PR stunt, while others might say that it's one of the first music and wine pairings. Waddaythink?

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him??

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him?? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jamie Goode has a good rant about half-price wines.

Supermarkets frequently discount wines, but is the practice of having "tactical" product lines that are designed to be deeply discounted ethically suspect? Should a £5 wine be sold as a £5 wine, rather than a half price £10 wine?

Have a read and then make up your mind whether you'll continue to chase those "discounts"?

Great Insight on the pricing strategy of high volume wines that are exclusive to large retailers.  The strategy is all about creating the appearance of a big discount when really the consumer is paying full price.

Australians and Americans to get Naked

Australians and Americans to get Naked | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Naked Wines, investing £5.5m in American and Australian vineyard projects as part of its international expansion.

This forward-thinking outfit is using its Angels' cash to snap up vineyard deals in the Australian and American markets. The money should gain Naked further sources of great wines at significantly reduced prices, while still working for the growers.

Naked is also launching retail websites in both markets, it seems. Maybe I'll be shopping Naked in Sydney soon?

Chateau Chigwell!

It seems that the City of London has a new local vineyard!

In the surprising suberb of Chigwell, Mr & Mrs Bayliss's Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Fromberg have just produced their first vintage.

I've no idea what it's like, but I'd love to try it. It's such a shame that Graham Bayliss keeps the Essex stereotype going by saying that he doesn't really like wine himself. I'm sure that's great for his marketing!

Read Auo Akintola's rant on how unfair the UK's wine tax rises are.

Fancy paying 55% tax? Buy a £5 bottle of wine in London! Oh, and don't forget that the UK now pays40% of all the alcohol duties in Europe. Maybe he has a point?
