Tim Atikin has written up his recent tasting of supermarket own-brand wines. It's interesting and might convince you to try a few.
What would be even more interesting would be to try the next levels up. I'd never expect the "value" or "kwality" wines to be that great, but the "special", "finest" and ones where we should "taste the difference" can represent really good value for money.

Supermarkets frequently discount wines, but is the practice of having "tactical" product lines that are designed to be deeply discounted ethically suspect? Should a £5 wine be sold as a £5 wine, rather than a half price £10 wine?

It seems that Australia's supermarket giants are about to wage a price war over $625 a bottle Penfolds Grange 2007.

I've got to admit that Jacob's Creek often shows well in tastings, and their regional reserve wines are pretty good value - at the moment. Read how the owners, Pernod Ricard, are making a determined push to take the price upwards and move Jacobs Creek out of the supermarket discount bins.
Is this the beginning of the end for branded wine offers? Personally, I hope so. I'd rather see things selling at the price the market thinks they're worth. What about you?
