David Swaddle's insight:

Tim Atikin has written up his recent tasting of supermarket own-brand wines. It's interesting and might convince you to try a few.

What would be even more interesting would be to try the next levels up. I'd never expect the "value" or "kwality" wines to be that great, but the "special", "finest" and ones where we should "taste the difference" can represent really good value for money.

What do you think? Any wines that you'd add to Tim's drink or avoid lists?

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him??

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him?? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jamie Goode has a good rant about half-price wines.

Supermarkets frequently discount wines, but is the practice of having "tactical" product lines that are designed to be deeply discounted ethically suspect? Should a £5 wine be sold as a £5 wine, rather than a half price £10 wine?

Have a read and then make up your mind whether you'll continue to chase those "discounts"?

Great Insight on the pricing strategy of high volume wines that are exclusive to large retailers.  The strategy is all about creating the appearance of a big discount when really the consumer is paying full price.

$600 wine in supermarket price war - SMH

$600 wine in supermarket price war - SMH | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

It seems that Australia's supermarket giants are about to wage a price war over $625 a bottle Penfolds Grange 2007.

It's one of Aussie's iconic wines, but that's not going to stop retail giants Woolworths, Coles and Costco going all out to see how cheaply they can sell it.

Does increasing a wine's price make it "premium"? - SMH

Does increasing a wine's price make it "premium"? - SMH | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jacobs Creek are making a conscious effort to increase the price of their wine and take it up market. Are sponsorship, endorsements and a higher price enough to make a wine "premium"?

I've got to admit that Jacob's Creek often shows well in tastings, and their regional reserve wines are pretty good value - at the moment. Read how the owners, Pernod Ricard, are making a determined push to take the price upwards and move Jacobs Creek out of the supermarket discount bins.

Is this the beginning of the end for branded wine offers? Personally, I hope so. I'd rather see things selling at the price the market thinks they're worth. What about you?
