Should 250ml glasses of wine go?

Should 250ml glasses of wine go? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jamie Goode, writing on the Wine Option website, suggests that the 250ml glass of wine should be scrapped.

I tend to agree. A glass that's a third of a bottle is simply too big. It doesn't fit in with the other drinks in a round in the pub and it stealthily gets people to consume more alcohol. It's bordering on irresponsible.

Seeing as a glass of pub wine has to hit a price point of £5-£7, I would much rather drink a glass half the size and three times the quality (double the price, treble the quality is a rule of mine). A 125ml glass at £5 would mean drinking a much better wine and consuming about the same alcohol as a beer drinker in the same round.

There's more on this on @bibendbumwines website: http://bibendum-times.co.uk/posts/news/2012/05/08/3-reasons-to-scrap-250ml-glasses-of-wine-in-the-on-trade/

French banks buy up more of Bordeaux - decanter.com

French banks buy up more of Bordeaux - decanter.com | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

André Lurton is selling an 18% stake in his Bordeaux wine company to Credit Agricole Grands Crus.

In a time when banking seems to be on the ropes in Europe, the CA seems to be digging deep to take a big stake in yet another Bordeaux venture.

Personally, I find the ownership of much of Bordeaux's vineyards by banks and insurance companies a little bit odd, especially seeeing how many of these companies have had to receive state bailouts over the years. How about you?

Red Tape Removes Hill of Grace from Barossa

Red Tape Removes Hill of Grace from Barossa | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

The Australian government is looking at protecting the Barossa Valley’s classic wine areas using local administrative boundaries rather than wine region boundaries.

In a plot worthy of Yes Minister, this means that the country’s second most expensive vineyard, Henschke’s Hill of Grace, is excluded. The glorious Eden Valley, where HoG is located, is in the wrong administrative area. Or more accurately, it’s on the wrong side of the red tape.

Surely some mischtake?

If the proposed law is designed to protect Australia’s wine growing heritage, then surely it should follow the wine region boundaries? Or, could it possibly be politicians looking after their own interests with some devious plan that will surface in a couple of years?

Alcohol pricing counterfeit fear - BBC

Alcohol pricing counterfeit fear - BBC | Wine in the World | Scoop.it
Plans to introduce a minimum price on alcohol in England and Wales could cause a rise in counterfeit alcohol, warns the Local Government Association.

Maybe the idea of lowering the load on A&E will backfire? Having seen fake vodka, whisky and port, maybe faking it is going to filter down the food chain?

Surely educating people to drink less would be better?
