Where is China’s fake lake?

Where is China’s fake lake? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Debra Meiburg is looking in to whether China's wine faking industry is myth or reality?

Just how much fake wine is out there, particularly in China, is open to debate. Most peoples' thoughts are based on rumour and speculation, rather than first hand experience. A bit like the Coke & Lafite stories.

Can you help Debra find the fakes? Maybe not just in China, but globally?

Wine Writer Bullies

Wine Writer Bullies | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

A great follow-up on the $uckling $tory and wine writers acting as bullies.

Is it sensible that they keep on threatening to sue people simply for publishing what they've been up to? We're not talking about things being made up, but about the truth.

Surely they would be better off getting their houses in order than using the courts to bully people into staying silent?

$usckling $ucks Bucks - Dr Vino

$usckling $ucks Bucks - Dr Vino | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

It looks like wine critic James Suckling received $24,000 for reviewing wines in Canada.

The well known wine critic appears to have received payment for Canadian wine reviews despite saying that he didn't receive a penny. "No financial relationship" is what he said. $24,000 seems to say something else.

How much does it matter that reviewers are receiving these payments? Is it just a matter of disclosure, or is it more fundamentally wrong than that?

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him??

Jamie Goode hates half-price wines - are you with him?? | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Jamie Goode has a good rant about half-price wines.

Supermarkets frequently discount wines, but is the practice of having "tactical" product lines that are designed to be deeply discounted ethically suspect? Should a £5 wine be sold as a £5 wine, rather than a half price £10 wine?

Have a read and then make up your mind whether you'll continue to chase those "discounts"?

Great Insight on the pricing strategy of high volume wines that are exclusive to large retailers.  The strategy is all about creating the appearance of a big discount when really the consumer is paying full price.

Fine wine really can be a con - NZ Herald News

Fine wine really can be a con - NZ Herald News | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Read how Simon Mickelson duped investors and ran a NZ$1.3m (US$1.06m) scam.

"Plausible and well-connected" are words that crop up in this tale of wine skullduggery. Switching labels on bottles of Laffite, robbing one client to pay another and driving around in flash motors pretending his grandmother had died. All in a day's graft it seems.

It shows just how easy it is to be taken in by a conman. Bang him up, I say.

Counterfeit wine scams “tip of the iceberg” | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Addressing attendees of the Fine & Rare Specialist course at Vienna’s Palais Coburg earlier this month, the head of Sotheby’s wine department said that current allegations concerning counterfeiting were “the tip of the iceberg”.

Marques de Riscal send the "wrong" 2004 for review

Marques de Riscal send the "wrong" 2004 for review | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

It seems that Marques de Riscal accidentally sent the "wrong" 2004 Gran Reserva for review to Spanish paper El Mundo.

According to my Google translation, they accidentally sent a bottle of the 150 Year Anniversary Reserva 2004 instead. That's quite a mistake as they are effectively two different wines and the switch implied a much better quality.

Oops!

To be fair, they have offered to exchange any bottles of the Gran Reserva that people bought because of the review for the more expensive 150 anniversary reserva. That's a pretty good deal, if you ask me.

Have you seen a review of the 2004 Riscal Reserva anywhere else? I wonder if they were sent an incorrectly labelled bottle too?

Campogate - Parker responds

Campogate - Parker responds | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

The Drinks Business reports on Campogate.

Robert Parker has posted the results of an investigation into "payments" received for tastings in Spain on The Wine Advocate website.

While heads have rolled, it seems that TWA doesn't see anything too wrong with what happened. It says that no payments were taken for reviews.

Fraud in Burgundy - La Vigne (French)

It seems that hardly a day goes by without another case of wine fraud. This time it's in Burgundy.

A wine merchant in Beaune, unnamed in this article, has been idicted for deceptive marketing practices and breaching AOC rules. He is charged with changing the labels on bottles and using wines from the South.

Bottles known to be sold include the rather pricey Vougeot 1er Cru.

Send him down!
