Chinese buys first Bordeaux classed growth

Chinese buys first Bordeaux classed growth | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

The long march to acquire not only wine assets, but good ones, continues from China.

A 13-hectare St-Emilion grand cru estate in St Laurent-des-Combes is understood to have been bought by a Chinese industrialist

Although the details of the deal have not been disclosed, a classified estate in the St-Emilion appellation would expect to sell for between €1 million and €2m per hectare. That's a lot of cash for those vines!

Bellefont-Belcier is the first classed growth Bordeaux property to pass into Chinese hands and joins approximately 40 other Bordeaux estates with Chinese owners. Many of them seem to be improving with a bit of new investment.

The Wine-Searcher St Emilion classification

The Wine-Searcher St Emilion classification | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Using information from the Wine-Searcher database, Rebecca Gibb reviews the new Saint-Émilion classification.

It's a nice take on the controversial re-working of this structure. I particularly like the bang-for-your-buck analysis. So, what's the best value in the new classification? Read on to find out.

Chateau Latour Stops Selling Futures - James Suckling

Chateau Latour Stops Selling Futures - James Suckling | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Chateau Latour are to stop selling wines "en primeur", opting instead to sell them when they're ready to drink.

Does this move towards a more Spanish model mark a big shift in the future of Bordeaux?

Fine old wines: tastings at The Civil Service Club, London

Sarah Ahmed has posted about a bunch of upcoming tastings in London.

At £35 a time, these are brilliant value. I wish I were there to try the St Emilion's and Burgundies in particular.

Seeing as our London Tasting Sessions are taking a break at the moment, why not give these a go?

French banks buy up more of Bordeaux - decanter.com

French banks buy up more of Bordeaux - decanter.com | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

André Lurton is selling an 18% stake in his Bordeaux wine company to Credit Agricole Grands Crus.

In a time when banking seems to be on the ropes in Europe, the CA seems to be digging deep to take a big stake in yet another Bordeaux venture.

Personally, I find the ownership of much of Bordeaux's vineyards by banks and insurance companies a little bit odd, especially seeeing how many of these companies have had to receive state bailouts over the years. How about you?

Where to taste wine in Bordeaux

Where to taste wine in Bordeaux | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

It sounds like a lot has improved since I last visited, with a wealth of places to learn, taste and drink wine in Bordeaux.

Read Natasha Edwards' guide to getting to grips with grapes in Bordeaux. What a great place to go and do a bit of "research and development".

Chinese industrialist to buy French wine estate Bellefont-Belcier

Chinese industrialist to buy French wine estate Bellefont-Belcier | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

A Chinese industrialist is to purchase the 13ha Chateau Bellefont-Belcier, a Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe.

It seems that the Chinese really do have a taste for Bordeaux, particularly the Right Bank's Merlot dominated blends. They are a bit easier drinking, after all.

How long before Chinese industrialists own as many of the estates as the French insurance industry does? Hopefully they'll continue to bring fresh investment and modernisation with them.

Tesco to sell Lafite

Tesco to sell Lafite | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Fancy dropping £600+ on a bottle of wine at the local supermarket.

Tesco are launching a Clubcard boosting range of premium fine wines including £600+ a bottle Château Lafite.

While it's great to hear that that a few UK high streets are going to be seeing this cracking range of wines it's tinged with disappointment that they'll be further squeezing wine producers by introducing more supermarket own-label wines. Why can't they just pick some decent wines from good producers and leave them in their original bottles?

Are Pesticides Killing our Wine Makers - La Vigne

Are Pesticides Killing our Wine Makers - La Vigne | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

La Vigne reports on a newspaper interview with Dr Nadine Houédé, a Bordeaux oncologist, where she talks about the incidence of cancer in vineyard workers.

She suggests that the patients seen now were exposed to pesticides in the 60's and 70's, likening this to asbestos exposure.

An interview with MIchel Roland about his book (In French)

An interview with MIchel Roland about his book (In French) | Wine in the World | Scoop.it

Michel Roland is probably one of the most loved and most loathed characters in French wine.

Read this short interview about his book. It translates well with Google.

Is he a demon, making all wines bigger, bolder, cleaner versions of themselves? Or, the devil, pushing wines towards a single regional character. This certainly shows some of the complexity of the man.
