Next year’s CIUTI forum (the International Standing Conference of University Institutes of Translating and Interpreting) will be held from Thursday 16 January 2014 to Friday 17 January 2014, at the United Nations, Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Marche: 18 awarded wines and, above all, the Verdicchio that, between the Castelli di Jesi and Matelica, scores a strike, with so many different interpretations and an average level very remarkable. The extraordinary interpretations of Verdicchio, these grapes so eclectic, have given us, this year, wines with fresh and sharp interpretations more subtle and refined than ever, with sober elegance and intense aroma. The Pecorino confirmed what expressed in 2013 among whites and so the reds with excellent performances, continuity and some new entries. To remark the dessert wines, especially obtained from dried grapes of Lacrima of Morro d' Alba and Verdicchio. 1 of 5 producers were not in the Guide 2013, great sign dynamicity.

We have already finished picking the grapes from our younger wines.
These include the “Verenda” parcel, so called because it lies just below the veranda we use as our tasting room; “Orfeo,” the vineyard that takes its name from Orpheus in Greek mythology; and “Pieve,” which means “parish church” in Italian and takes its name from the chapel that lies in the middle of the vineyard at the entrance to our estate.
Now we’ll start picking the Verdicchio that is destined to become our flagship Pievalta label and our Dominé.
Today, we began picking our “Emporio” vineyard, which was planted in 1970. It takes its name from the fact that it borders on what was once a general store and an old tavern where people stopped to eat bread and salami paired with a nice glass of Verdicchio, of course!

Pale straw and bright with a flinty lemon and maybe grapefruit nose. The palate has a well rounded mouthfeel with a tiny amount of upfront sweetness then there is citrus, some green apples, the tiniest hint of melon or peach sweetness with a finish that has really elegant acidity as it develops with the apple fruit continuing a long way and a wee peach note on the end.

Rosso Conero is a small DOC on the east coast of Italy in the state of the Marche. Rosso Conero the DOC is the land surrounding the extinct volcano of Monte Conero right on the Adriatic. A lot of the Marche is kind of flat and then out of nowhere, right on the ocean, you have this extinct volcano with totally different soils!

Piantate Lunghe is a project created by three friends to try to revive their family's old vineyards. Amedeo Giustini conceived the idea and then approached his two friends Roberto and Guido Mazzoni. Together they now have about 12 hectares of vineyards within 2000 meters of the Adriatic, but at an elevation of over a 1000 ft above sea level. The vineyard is a mix of dry clay and calcareous soil that slopes south away from the Monte Conero towards the water.
Varietal: 100% Montepulciano.
Vintage: 2010 - I don't know when this wine was released, but I just got the 2010 and it seems like the winery usually holds the wines for a long time. Considering how powerful and deep it is it would make sense that Piantate Lunghe would hold it a while to mellow.
Aroma: The 2010 Piantate Lunghe brings the funk. It's a dark, rich, funky smelling wine. This Rosso Conero's aroma is more rich loamy earth than dry sunny soil that Italian wines often have. The first impression of the Piantate Lunghe smells like freshly turned farm fields to me, but hiding behind that funk is some serious blackberry fruit as well as a whiff of smoke and grilled meat; maybe even some roasting coffee as well. There's a whiff of wood smoke that is so fitting for this time of year (Autumn).

On the palate, it has a strong, savory, persistent taste. It’s drinkability is both pleasing and engaging. Golden yellow in the glass that matches the color of the bottle’s label, Dominè Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classico Superiore 2011 marries well with a variety of main-course fish dishes, shellfish salads, sushi, pasta and pizza.
This Charmat rosé from the Marche region (central Italy) is surely in pole position for the award of most extravagant sparkling wine of my summer. A wine that’s strange in every way: the grapes used are the Vernaccia Nera di Serrapetrona and the color, scent and flavor are strange too. Yet, once tasted, it proved intriguing both for myself and for those who had the pleasure of enjoying it with me. I’m not a fan of Charmat sparkling wines, I much prefer classic method ones. I was encouraged to try this by the surprising pleasantness of a still rosé wine produced with the same grapes by the same winery, Tenuta Colli di Serrapetrona, the Marche Rosato Serrarosa 2011, about which I wrote on Il Cucchiaio d’argento. I’m intrigued by the versatility of the mysterious Vernaccia Nera grape, from which comes the only red Italian sparkling wine, which undergoes three successive fermentations. It’s been grown locally since ancient Roman times and was celebrated in 1893 in the Vine-growing and Enology Annual as the best red berry grape of the Marche region. [...]
