Toshiba gets aggressive with a $120, 7-inch Windows tablet

Toshiba gets aggressive with a $120, 7-inch Windows tablet | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Over the years, Windows tablets have been getting smaller and smaller -- and cheaper and cheaper. Well, surprise! They're getting tinier, and we've just about hit bargain-basement pricing. Toshiba just announced the Encore Mini, a 7-inch slate that will sell for just $120 -- an aggressive move, considering 8-inch models hover around the $200 mark. Technically speaking, the Encore Mini is not the cheapest Windows tablet out there, but it's definitely the lowest price we've seen from a tier-one brand. For the money, you get full Windows 8.1, though the specs are, as you'd expect, pretty low-end. These include a 1,024 x 600 display, a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735G processor with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage and dual 2MP/0.3MP cameras. At 0.78 pound, it's heavier than, say, the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 Nook, which we just reviewed, but either way, you shouldn't have a problem toting it around.

Back to School 2014: The 10 best tablets - Microsoft Surface Pro 3 | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft Surface Pro 3

In theory, at least, Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 can pull double duty as both a tablet and a laptop, but we’d recommend nabbing a machine with a better keyboard for writing term papers. Whether you choose to use the Pro 3 as a slate or as a do-it-all device, though, you’ll love the thin and light design, which includes a versatile kickstand.

Windows 9 will morph to fit the device it's running on

Windows 9 will morph to fit the device it's running on | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Still holding onto your trusty copy of Windows 7 with a steely kung-fu grip? Well partner, it looks like Microsoft's next operating system, codenamed "Threshold," or, Windows 9 in the common tongue, is aimed right at you. The OS will apparently ship in three different flavors (desktop, tablet and mobile) and recognize the hardware its running on and adjust the experience accordingly, as ZDNet's Windows-leak queen Mary Jo Foley writes. Meaning, if you're on a traditional desktop or laptop using a mouse and keyboard, Threshold will boot directly into the Windows desktop you know and love. The Live-tiled Start screen may return for people using touch-based machines like tablets and convertible laptops, although there will supposedly be an option to switch between the two environments if Threshold detects an attached keyboard. What's more, Foley's sources also say that if you're itching to get your hands on the new OS ahead of its reported launch next spring, there'll be a public preview version this autumn.

China brands Windows 8 a threat to its national security - BetaNews

China brands Windows 8 a threat to its national security - BetaNews | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

It’s fair to say China isn’t a fan of Windows 8. A few weeks ago, the tiled OS was banned from Chinese government computers, as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products (if this sounds a bit vague, that’s because the reason given is).

Then, if that wasn’t bad enough news for Microsoft, a state-backed news report broadcast on China's CCTV has really put the boot in, branding the operating system a threat to China's cybersecurity, and suggesting it is being used to spy on Chinese citizens.

In a telephone interview, Prof Yang Min of Fudan University stated that the closed nature of Windows 8 posed a threat to the nation's cybersecurity efforts.

"Microsoft would no longer open its Windows 8 source code to the Chinese government," he said. "However, the security scheme of the operating system is designed to provide better access for Microsoft to users' database. For China it’s a big challenge on our information security".

Microsoft expected to announce larger Surface on Tuesday - Neowin

Microsoft expected to announce larger Surface on Tuesday - Neowin | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft’s Surface event, which takes place on Tuesday, is turning out to be more than meets the eye. While it has long been suspectedthat the Surface mini would be shown off, and that other Surfaces were in the works (and their specs have been leaked), it now seems like we may also see a larger Surface too.

Here’s the deal: we had been hearing for some time that Microsoft wanted to expand the Surface line to meet a variety of use cases and feature sets, and it looks like the company is about to go all in. The latest bits from Paul Thurrott is saying that there will be a larger Surface unveiled, and that it could be thinner and have a smaller bezel; whispers of a 12in Surface have made the rounds previously.

Why ~12in? Well, for a ‘Pro’ tablet that is supposed to be a do-all, be-all solution, at a 10in screen, it’s always been a bit cramped for true laptop needs. Sure, the specs were great and the capabilities were there, but the screen real-estate never quite matched up to the true pro-sumer needs. And when you looked at comparable ultra-books, it became clear that the Surface may not be the best solution.

Windows 8.1 Spring Update back on Windows Update, links inside - Neowin

Windows 8.1 Spring Update back on Windows Update, links inside - Neowin | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it
Microsoft has again uploaded, or made available the files for the Spring Update for Windows 8.1. We have the links for the 6 kb updates intended for x86, x64 and ARM versions inside.

Others have had success doing it differently, but we here at Neowin have confirmed the above to be working. It's also possible that you will already have kb291442 already installed.

You can of course opt to wait it out and let Windows Update work its magic sometime at the beginning of April when it'll be rolled out worldwide. Or take the plunge and install now, please do note that the updates require multiple reboots, and may also be pulled from the download locations at any time, like what happened last time.

If this is the first time you're hearing about the Spring Update (or Update 1) you should probably wait for the official Windows Update roll-out, see what's new here for more details on what the update brings to Windows 8.1.

Lenovo's new gaming laptop is surprisingly light for a 17-inch machine

Lenovo's new gaming laptop is surprisingly light for a 17-inch machine | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Slimmed-down gaming laptops seem to be all the rage, but most of the designs we've seen don't have anything larger than a 14-inch display. Lenovo, however, appears to be taking a chance on big screens. The company just announced the Y70 Touch, a 17-inch machine that manages to come in at just 7.5 pounds, making it surprisingly thin and light for its size class. Other than having a larger screen, it features the same design as the existing Y50, which is to say it sports a brushed-metal chassis and red backlit keyboard (you can't have a gaming laptop without red accents, apparently). Tucked on the bottom you'll find a subwoofer with JBL speakers. Unfortunately, the touchscreen is slightly less impressive: It tops out at 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, whereas many smaller systems now give you the option of playing at 3,200 x 1,800 or 2,560 x 1,440.

Microsoft's new encryption makes it tougher to spy on your email

Microsoft's new encryption makes it tougher to spy on your email | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft said last year that it was tightening security to fend off the NSA and others who would scoop up your data, and today it fulfilled that promise with moves that should improve real-world security. The company now encrypts both incoming and outgoing Outlook.com email when it's in transit. So long as the other end also supports this encryption (Gmail and other big names do), snoops can't easily intercept messages in mid-flight. Microsoft is also implementing Perfect Forward Secrecy in both Outlook.com and OneDrive, which gives each connection a unique security key -- even if people do crack a code, they won't have a complete picture of your email or cloud storage.

Microsoft slashes Surface Pro 2 prices by up to £150

Microsoft slashes Surface Pro 2 prices by up to £150 | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft might be gearing up for the launch of its bigger, better Surface 3 tablet, but it still hopes to shift some older slates in the interim, with help from an enticing discount. In the biggest price cut we can remember since Surface RT received similar treatment, all configurations of Surface Pro 2 are now available through Microsoft's UK store for £140 or £150 off their normal cost. This means you can grab the base 64GB model for £569 (down from £719), up to the top-of-the-line 512GB unit for £1289 (reduced from £1439). Alright, so they're still not the most wallet-friendly tablets around, but if you want full-fat Windows 8.1 on a 10.6-inch slate, then at least these ones are cheaper than they were last week.
