Microsoft's new encryption makes it tougher to spy on your email

Microsoft's new encryption makes it tougher to spy on your email | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft said last year that it was tightening security to fend off the NSA and others who would scoop up your data, and today it fulfilled that promise with moves that should improve real-world security. The company now encrypts both incoming and outgoing Outlook.com email when it's in transit. So long as the other end also supports this encryption (Gmail and other big names do), snoops can't easily intercept messages in mid-flight. Microsoft is also implementing Perfect Forward Secrecy in both Outlook.com and OneDrive, which gives each connection a unique security key -- even if people do crack a code, they won't have a complete picture of your email or cloud storage.

Microsoft slashes Surface Pro 2 prices by up to £150

Microsoft slashes Surface Pro 2 prices by up to £150 | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft might be gearing up for the launch of its bigger, better Surface 3 tablet, but it still hopes to shift some older slates in the interim, with help from an enticing discount. In the biggest price cut we can remember since Surface RT received similar treatment, all configurations of Surface Pro 2 are now available through Microsoft's UK store for £140 or £150 off their normal cost. This means you can grab the base 64GB model for £569 (down from £719), up to the top-of-the-line 512GB unit for £1289 (reduced from £1439). Alright, so they're still not the most wallet-friendly tablets around, but if you want full-fat Windows 8.1 on a 10.6-inch slate, then at least these ones are cheaper than they were last week.

Microsoft will use pop-ups to warn Windows XP users to upgrade - The Verge

Microsoft will use pop-ups to warn Windows XP users to upgrade - The Verge | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft is planning to use pop-up warnings to entice Windows XP users to upgrade. The software maker is ending support of XP on April 8th, and will start distributing notices next week to machines running the 12-year-old operating system. Pop-up warnings will appear on March 8th following the monthly patch cycle of Windows Update, and the notification will include a link to Microsoft’s Windows XP end of support site. The pop-up will continue on the 8th of every month unless Windows XP users check the "don’t show this message again" option.

Microsoft is also releasing a free transfer tool later this week that’s designed to migrate data from an old PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. The tool, developed by Laplink, will copy files, music, videos, emails, user profiles, and settings from an old PC to a new one. If a blue taskbar and green Start button hasn’t alerted you to the fact you’re running Windows XP, then Microsoft is also launching a site for consumers who are unsure whether they have XP or not. Like Microsoft’s support site, it will also encourage Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Lenovo Yoga 2 11-inch now available, starting at $519

Lenovo Yoga 2 11-inch now available, starting at $519 | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

If you've been itching for a new convertible since CES last month, sales pages for Lenovo's refreshed Yoga line have started popping up online. Best Buy has the 11-inch Bay-Trail-equipped Yoga 2 listed for $519, while you can buy direct from the manufacturer for $799 -- a far cry higher than the previously announced $529. With the yellow-tag store's lower price, however, comes a caveat: the Yoga 2 doesn't have a release date just yet. It's totally up to you if ordering (Lenovo's ship time is "within three weeks") the touchscreen's efficient 2.4GHz Pentium, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive right now is worth the premium though. After all, $280 is still a decent amount of cash.

Windows 9 will morph to fit the device it's running on

Windows 9 will morph to fit the device it's running on | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Still holding onto your trusty copy of Windows 7 with a steely kung-fu grip? Well partner, it looks like Microsoft's next operating system, codenamed "Threshold," or, Windows 9 in the common tongue, is aimed right at you. The OS will apparently ship in three different flavors (desktop, tablet and mobile) and recognize the hardware its running on and adjust the experience accordingly, as ZDNet's Windows-leak queen Mary Jo Foley writes. Meaning, if you're on a traditional desktop or laptop using a mouse and keyboard, Threshold will boot directly into the Windows desktop you know and love. The Live-tiled Start screen may return for people using touch-based machines like tablets and convertible laptops, although there will supposedly be an option to switch between the two environments if Threshold detects an attached keyboard. What's more, Foley's sources also say that if you're itching to get your hands on the new OS ahead of its reported launch next spring, there'll be a public preview version this autumn.

China brands Windows 8 a threat to its national security - BetaNews

China brands Windows 8 a threat to its national security - BetaNews | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

It’s fair to say China isn’t a fan of Windows 8. A few weeks ago, the tiled OS was banned from Chinese government computers, as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products (if this sounds a bit vague, that’s because the reason given is).

Then, if that wasn’t bad enough news for Microsoft, a state-backed news report broadcast on China's CCTV has really put the boot in, branding the operating system a threat to China's cybersecurity, and suggesting it is being used to spy on Chinese citizens.

In a telephone interview, Prof Yang Min of Fudan University stated that the closed nature of Windows 8 posed a threat to the nation's cybersecurity efforts.

"Microsoft would no longer open its Windows 8 source code to the Chinese government," he said. "However, the security scheme of the operating system is designed to provide better access for Microsoft to users' database. For China it’s a big challenge on our information security".

Microsoft expected to announce larger Surface on Tuesday - Neowin

Microsoft expected to announce larger Surface on Tuesday - Neowin | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

Microsoft’s Surface event, which takes place on Tuesday, is turning out to be more than meets the eye. While it has long been suspectedthat the Surface mini would be shown off, and that other Surfaces were in the works (and their specs have been leaked), it now seems like we may also see a larger Surface too.

Here’s the deal: we had been hearing for some time that Microsoft wanted to expand the Surface line to meet a variety of use cases and feature sets, and it looks like the company is about to go all in. The latest bits from Paul Thurrott is saying that there will be a larger Surface unveiled, and that it could be thinner and have a smaller bezel; whispers of a 12in Surface have made the rounds previously.

Why ~12in? Well, for a ‘Pro’ tablet that is supposed to be a do-all, be-all solution, at a 10in screen, it’s always been a bit cramped for true laptop needs. Sure, the specs were great and the capabilities were there, but the screen real-estate never quite matched up to the true pro-sumer needs. And when you looked at comparable ultra-books, it became clear that the Surface may not be the best solution.

Windows 8.1 Spring Update back on Windows Update, links inside - Neowin

Windows 8.1 Spring Update back on Windows Update, links inside - Neowin | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it
Microsoft has again uploaded, or made available the files for the Spring Update for Windows 8.1. We have the links for the 6 kb updates intended for x86, x64 and ARM versions inside.

Others have had success doing it differently, but we here at Neowin have confirmed the above to be working. It's also possible that you will already have kb291442 already installed.

You can of course opt to wait it out and let Windows Update work its magic sometime at the beginning of April when it'll be rolled out worldwide. Or take the plunge and install now, please do note that the updates require multiple reboots, and may also be pulled from the download locations at any time, like what happened last time.

If this is the first time you're hearing about the Spring Update (or Update 1) you should probably wait for the official Windows Update roll-out, see what's new here for more details on what the update brings to Windows 8.1.

Microsoft releases SharePoint Server 2013 SP1; new version coming in 2015 - Neowin

Microsoft releases SharePoint Server 2013 SP1; new version coming in 2015 - Neowin | Windows 8 - CompuSpace | Scoop.it

As part of their many announcements made at today's 2014 SharePoint Conference, Microsoft revealed that SharePoint Server 2013 Service Pack 1 is now available for download. SP1 has a few improvements for the web-based content management and collaboration tools designed for enterprise customers.

The Office blog reveals what's being put into this service pack. It includes a way to add a connection to the OneDrive for Business data storage service for Office 365 users, along with offering Yammer as an alternative to the default NewsFeed social network in SharePoint 2013. Finally, it adds support for JSON Light in OData v3 requests. Naturally there are a number of bug fixes in this SP1 release; it collects all of the patches that Microsoft has offered for SharePoint Server 2013 between December 2013 and February 2014.

IT admins who might have expected Microsoft to release a new version of SharePoint Server this year might be disappointed. Microsoft indicated that such a release won't be made available until sometime in 2015. In the meantime, SharePoint Server 2013 will keep getting "the latest performance, security, and reliability fixes through ongoing releases of both public and cumulative updates", according to the blog post.
