New Jersey was the third State to join the Union in December 1787. One of the smallest States it sits on the northern end of the east coast. Its complete area spans only 8,721 square miles, making it the 47th largest State - or the third smallest. Due to the fact that of its proximity to the north west Atlantic Ocean New Jersey is one of the States that tend to experience seriously inclement climate, including cyclones and tropical storms. The results of these heavy storms can be a huge clean-up operation, an enormous amounts of insurance claims and some severe water and flood damage.
