Research suggests meditation and mental exercises may be better than drugs at helping people cope with attention problems.

Strengthen the Mental Muscle: A Therapeutic Dose of Mindfulness (without a prescription).

Mindfulness has the ability to bring attention and greater awareness to the moment. 

 

It makes since then that Mindfulness would benefit the child version, ADHD, and the adult version, Attention Deficit Disorder.

Researchers at UC Irvine, namely @James M. Swanson, Psychologist, says that "mindfulness seems to be training the same areas of the brain that have reduced activity in ADHD.

 

The key it seems is to reduce impulsivity, in the case of mindfulness, learning to monitor thoughts and emotions non-judgmentally, without reactivity.

 

This dose of self-control can be taught to kids and adults, and it's benefits extend beyond medical diagnoses of attention deficit.

 

Mindfulness has practical uses in stress reduction and relaxation, creativity, learning, and pain management. 

 

Mindfulness is beginning to enter our culture, and with applications at an early age may be this next generations greatest gift.

Somethimes you just have to take the bull by the horns. Take a look at the deeper meaning of what you desire. What is the long-term benefit and how does that outweigh the short-term satisfaction.

You relate this to your well-being and pursuits of athletic performance:

1. Sleep- sticking to your work week bedtime within an hour on the weekend.

2. Nutrition- what do your refrig stocked with healthy foods. This helps in having an environment set to support your positive habits. If you are going to have that special treat, make it a reward for your postive habits.

 

These are just a few positive rituals, or habits that can help when pursuing a fitness or athletic performance goal.

Willpower - its all about getting the hardest things out of the way when you are at your mental peak, keeping in mind your long term goals and taking breaks to refuel your sugar levels.  Doing all these things will help you have the stamina to tackle the hardest of tasks without resorting to "I'll start tomorrow"

(From the article): Create reminders of long-term goals. You want to build a bigger company, but when you're mentally tired, it's easy to rationalize doing less than your best. You want to lose weight, but when you're mentally tired, it's easy to rationalize that you'll start tomorrow. You want to better engage with your employees, but when you're mentally tired, it's easy to rationalize that you really need to work on that proposal instead.

 

Mental fatigue makes you take the easy way out--even though the easy way takes you the wrong way.

The tricky thing about stress (and the anxiety that comes with it) is that it’s an absolutely necessary emotion. This is simply not rocket science, but something that we have always known about, and perhaps forgotten down the road. Stress management has been the key to the success of everyone living in a society bordering on chaos. The successful mother, the mature director, the 'Mr Cool Dude' are all metaphors of successful people who manage their stress levels to remain calm even in the most challenging of situations. True, some might have an innate capability for remaining calm, but then others can train themselves too!

just imagine some professions like Armed Forces, Medicine, Airline Pilots, shipping, police where stress levels are very high, yet many of them remain so calm and composed.  Its comes through extensive training. A great article with research taking a look at the impact of strategies that are most effective in successfully setting and reaching your goals.

The Impactful Strategies are listed in order of effect magnitude.

Interestingly Grit, or the persistence over the long haul is at the top of the list.

Accomplishing a goal, or achievement, is linked to two important character traits related to our well-being, Grit and Self-Control.

It is noted by Martin Seligman in his book

Flourish ( http://amzn.to/WXGuER ;),that Achievement is related to our skill and knowledge of a task, or pursuit. 

To leverage accomplishment, spend more time on the task. This will increase the skill and knowledge.

Some people have that natural ability, or skill/knowledge base. Do they also have the Grit and Self-Control to persist at an endeavor? 

It comes down to if you want it bad enough, have the will to push through the hardtimes and obstacles, you can achieve what you want.

 

You Don't Need to be the Sharpest Stick, You Just Need to Stick with it.

 

It is a Choice You Have.
