Pincher Creek Voice: 2015 Christmas Greeting from MLA Pat Stier

Pincher Creek Voice: 2015 Christmas Greeting from MLA Pat Stier | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it
Pat Stier, MLA, Livingstone-Macleod

As the MLA for the provincial constituency of Livingstone Macleod, it is my sincere pleasure to have this opportunity to once again say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone in Southern Alberta.

Christmas time is for me normally where I reflect back on how I have celebrated this wonderful occasion since I was a child here on our family farm in the early 60s. It always brings back so many fond memories of that time of year. Bundling up each day, doing chores in the barns, feeding animals, struggling through deep snow drifts out to the fields in our old tractors pulling hayracks to get to our stacks of hay, for another load to last the cattle and horses for a few days. I fondly remember while working away too, how ravenous I would become as the smell of my grandmothers’ savory soup drifted across the yard to the barns.

One of my favorite memories each year is of the outings to get “the tree” for Christmas. My grandfather, my dad, my sister and I armed with shovels and axes, would hook up the stone boat behind the old Case tractor and push a trail through to the back country of our ranch along the Bow River in search of the best one. What a fabulous adventure, plunging through waist deep snow, helping to fell that special prize and ride with it on the stone boat for about an hour back to the farmyard. Often while there, we would shovel the snow off the ice on the nearby slough and skate for a couple of hours before returning home. This of course was just the lead up to a day of wonderful celebration full of gifts, great food and joyous times.

Unfortunately for myself and so many Albertans this year, these hearty Country Christmas thoughts have been delayed and high-jacked by the chain of events regarding the Bill 6 issue that has so negatively impacted and threatened our Farming and Ranching businesses and lifestyle. My heart goes out to all of those that took the time to write the thousands of emails and letters we have received and to those that felt so strongly about this to drive for hours to attend the many rally’s both locally and at the Legislature grounds in Edmonton. There has been a lot of emotion surrounding Bill 6 and other Alberta government policies that most of you are justifiably worried about and the consequences of these rushed and ill-thought pieces of legislation. We in the Official Opposition Wildrose Party work for you and we will do our best to advocate for you as we monitor how these changes will affect all Albertans.

Just like the days gone by, Christmas should always be a time for all of us to set aside challenges and enjoy our time with families and friends. I wish all residents in Southern Alberta a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season.

Pat Stier, MLA

Livingstone-Macleod: Wildrose incumbent hangs on

Livingstone-Macleod: Wildrose incumbent hangs on | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it
As one of only five Wildrose MLAs who didn’t cross over to join the Progressive Conservatives last year, and one of only three of those five still running for re-election, Pat Stier was rewarded for his loyalty Tuesday in the riding of Livingstone-Mcleod.

“I’m one of the few survivors,” said Stier, who was declared winner as he spent the evening taking in results with campaign workers in the town of Claresholm.

Stier attended the open house sessions in Cowley and Lundbreck.

“I think everybody here is very concerned about the amount of wind energy and the industrialization of this corridor is starting to become a more heard issue in my office,” the MLA said. “As AltaLink and the AESO decide how they’re going to continue to power up this area one has to wonder I think - and most of the people are saying this - just when is enough enough?”

Surplus … really › The Lethbridge Herald – myLH.ca | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it
For the region’s sole remaining Wildrose MLA, however, the financial report was another example of the long-ruling Conservatives “juggling the numbers.” Pat Stier, MLA for Livingstone-Macleod, said Campbell’s report is based on the same “fudge-it budget” system rejected last year by the province’s auditor general.
Pat Stier's insight:

Stier, responding to Campbell’s surprise announcement, said the Conservatives’ budget numbers can’t be trusted because they’re still using the reporting system introduced during former premier Alison Redford’s tenure. No other province frames its financial picture that way, he pointed out.

“But the government stillhas a spending problem,” regardless of how it’s reported.

“I don’t know how anyone can trust anything they say.”

The Conservative government is still taxing Albertans so it can assist the province’s large corporations, Stier said.

But at the same time, he said, the premier’s “doom and gloom” speeches are throwing a chill into the rest of the economy.

Review of infrastructure assets should include selling off MLA offices: Wildrose | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

“This PC government is clearly showing their priorities by putting the comforts of MLAs and bureaucrats ahead of hospital repairs and school classrooms,” Wildrose Infrastructure Critic Pat Stier said. “This project has been a disaster from the start with constant delays and going $100 million over budget.  With the value of the land, and the cost of the renovations, the government should be able to earn back solid returns, with the added benefit of closing the gap on this year’s deficit.”

The Pincher Creek Voice: Politics – a noble service

The Pincher Creek Voice: Politics – a noble service | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

Since December 18, 2014 many people in Alberta and beyond have reached out to me in the past 15 days regarding the decision I had made, where I had refused to join the 9 other Wildrose MLAs in the recent floor crossing to join the Progressive Conservative caucus. This has inspired to me to write today to perhaps provide clarity to the decision, describe my principles and beliefs and to thank everyone who have been so kind with their comments and support.

De-politicize hospital infrastructure, publish a public priority list

De-politicize hospital infrastructure, publish a public priority list | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said in order to put an end to the crumbling state of our hospitals, it’s crucial the government immediately releases a public prioritized infrastructure list.

“The only way to stop any government from politicizing infrastructure spending is to outline the priority of all requested capital projects across the province and release the full list to the public,” Smith said. “It will provide cost savings and is the first step in addressing the growing crisis facing our hospitals from across the province.”

Eliminate or amend the real problem - Bill 36: Barnes | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

“Being able to access the courts and receive due process is a basic freedom in our province and country, but Bill 36 consistently denies these rights to Alberta landowners who find themselves in conflict with the PC government on property issues,” Barnes said. “Repealing these problematic sections in Bill 36 is a no brainer given the stories and feedback we’ve all received from landowner groups, but the Minister is clearly not listening.”

Erosion of property rights continues under Bill 36 in Castle Park designation

Erosion of property rights continues under Bill 36 in Castle Park designation | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

“The NDP have long advocated for amendments to be made to the wide sweeping legislation in Bill 36”, Wildrose Livingstone-Macleod MLA Pat Stier, who has the Castle area within his riding, said. “We would have been hopeful the new government would have acted on their concerns and implemented amendments to narrow the scope of the bill and strengthen property rights in Alberta before making these changes.”

“The NDP are going to have to negotiate fair market compensation for land, lease, and license holders affected by this move,” Stier said. “With the NDP ending new natural resources industries in the Castle, Wildrose can only hope the development of the tourism industry can offset the economic impact of these decisions.”

Report released and reaction to RCMP gun seizures during flood | News Talk 770 (CHQR) | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it
The Wildrose Party says today’s report confirms the violation of individual property rights by RCMP at some homes in High River.   Municipal Affairs Critic Pat Stier calls it an abuse of the public’s trust. Stier says the RCMP must immediately implement the report’s recommendations.

The opposition party adds the findings show a vacuum of leadership among provincial authorities in providing guidelines under the Alberta Emergency Management Act.  Stier says it unacceptable that neither the RCMP nor government officials were willing to show accountability for mistakes made during the crisis.

Opinion: Strive to help, not stigmatize, after suicide | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it
We shout it together: My son’s life mattered. Our children’s lives matter.

This is not the time to be talking about cutbacks to health care and mental health resources; this is the time to yelling at the top of our lungs for help for our children.

So if it seems as though I am channelling the profound grief at my son’s loss into a rage against the corporate medical monstrosity that keeps those in need from getting the medical attention and treatment they so desperately require, I am. And I won’t be stopping any time soon.

So, Government of Alberta, this grieving mother is coming for you and your impending cuts to health care. And I’m coming with an army of moms and dads behind.

“We can no longer run our province based on what OPEC is doing in the Middle East. If we don’t, we leave the future of our province at risk by crushing future generations with debt and finance charges.”

Wildrose amendments offer extra protection for LGBTQ students, balance local autonomy

Wildrose amendments offer extra protection for LGBTQ students, balance local autonomy | Wildrose MLA Pat Stier | Scoop.it

“Bill 10 in its current form offers little to no protection for LGBTQ students. It must be strengthened,” Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said. “Our amendments wouldn’t allow schools or school boards to simply say ‘no’ and walk away. They will have to provide support to whoever requests it.”

Smith also said it’s completely unreasonable to expect students to mount legal appeals.

“Students are in no position to be hiring lawyers and challenging these decisions in court,” she said. “If our amendments are accepted, students will have an accessible appeal process readily available to them that will settle these matters.”

“Taken together, I believe these amendments find the right balance between the rights of LGTBQ students and the autonomy of locally elected school boards.”

“We’ve seen cuts to electronic monitoring of high risk criminals, a complete vacuum of leadership on legal aid, and funding denied to victims of sexual abuse, but they still have the time and cash to run art exhibits for convicted criminals,” Saskiw said. “It’s unbelievable that the Minister of Justice would prioritize these cozy programs for inmates ahead of some of the most vulnerable people in our province.”
