Being a conservation ranger out on patrol is about being observant at all times and being prepared to cover huge distances. Areas covered need to be carefully checked for signs of any poaching activity. Forest elephants live secretive lives in the rainforests of Central Africa. We don’t know much about their lives, and what we do know raises many interesting questions about them. In 2009 we convened a workshop of more than 20 researchers working on forest elephants to share best practice and outline the important research questions for forest elephant conservation. During that workshop, we decided to write a book to collate our knowledge and experience.
