The African Lion finds new friends in high places

The African Lion finds new friends in high places | Wildlife Conservation: People and Stories | Scoop.it

From Herd Boy to Wildlife Ranger

From Herd Boy to Wildlife Ranger | Wildlife Conservation: People and Stories | Scoop.it

Khimbini Hlongwane from Inyati Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand was captivated by animals from an early age.

“Growing up in a village in the eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga) got me exposed to wildlife from a young age and I was fascinated by the behaviours of various animals,” he says. “I loved being out there with brothers herding cattle and goats while interacting with wildlife. Trying to save Africa's forest elephants

Trying to save Africa's forest elephants | Wildlife Conservation: People and Stories | Scoop.it

A conservation scientist spent decades trying to study them and protect them from poaching....

"I always wanted to do something different," says Andrea Turkalo, one of the world's experts on Africa's elusive forest elephants. For most of the past 24 years, the former high school science teacher from Taunton, Mass., lived in the Central African Republic's remote Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, an area she calls "the epicenter of forest elephants." Working closely with a team of Bayaka pygmies, Ms. Turkalo, 61, a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society, documented the social behavior and physical characteristics of the elephants, which are harder to follow than their savanna relatives because of their dense rain forest habitat. She lived in a solar-powered, thatched-roof house, spoke Sango (the local language) and kept a machete in her pickup truck. Unfazed by coups, malaria and the risk of trampling, Ms. Turkalo identified and researched 4,000 individual elephants. Her presence helped deter poachers eying elephants for their ivory; by watching the animals closely, she could head off problems early. The region became her home....

Elephant calf devoted to dying mother

Elephant calf devoted to dying mother | Wildlife Conservation: People and Stories | Scoop.it

The story of an elephant calf's utter devotion to its mother in her dying days....

A female elephant is sick – Cherie. She has a five month old calf. She keeps stretching out her back legs or leaning uncomfortably forward, as if trying to ease pain in her stomach. Apparently she’s been like this for weeks. Her calf tries to suckle but she brushes it off the nipple with her leg. At this age he relies almost entirely on her milk. I notice the deep indentations of her temples, and the sharp pinch around her cheekbones. Signs of dehydration. This is serious....
