The Brazilian government's geographic department (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística-roughly equivalent to the U.S. Census Bureau) has compiled an fantastic interactive world factbook (available in English and Spanish as well as Portuguese). The ease of navigation allows the user to conduct a specific search of simply explore demographic, economic, environmental and development data on any country in the world.

The world, here, is literally at your fingertips. It is a simple way for anyone to locate a multitude of data about any given place around the world. It is another way that brings the whole world that much closer in this technological era.

Pew Research has just published a study that looks at how teens do research in the digital world. They survey was done "in collaboration with the College Board and the National Writing Project." Below are a couple of the key findings (quoted). * Virtually all (99%) AP and NWP teachers in this study agree with the notion that 'the internet enables students to access a wider range of resources than would otherwise be available,' and 65% agree that 'the internet makse today's students more self-sufficient.' * Fewer teachers, but still a majority of this sample (60%), agree with the assertion that today's technologies make it harder for students to find credible sources of information. Big data is not new. It has existed for ages and can be attributed even to the initial years of computing. However, one might do well to consider why is there an increased buzz around this now. The answer is quite simple: Significant advances that have been brought about by x86 hardware have actually helped in bringing computing power to the masses. However, with new technologies, cloud computing has extended this power. Now, users have extended perimeters, while still being able to control costs effectively... Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby? And for decades, major American corporations employed industrial psychologists and routinely gave job candidates personality and intelligence tests.
Companies pulled back from such statistical analysis of employees in the 1970s, amid questions about its effectiveness, worker resistance and a wave of anti-discrimination lawsuits. Companies apparently figured that if any of their test results showed women or minorities doing poorly, it might become evidence in court cases, said Peter Cappelli, director of the Center for Human Resources at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Today, worker measurement and testing is enjoying a renaissance, powered by digital tools.
