Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection

Curation At Work: The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Robin Good: The David Ramsey Map Collection is an historical collection of thousands of beautiful maps and atlases organized and made freely accessible to the public online in unique and unprecedented ways.

This is a stunning example of a visual curated collection, offering thousands of beautiful images at very high quality, and multiple ways and tools to navigate this ocean of maps.

This online collection offers in fact no less than 12 different ways to navigate its contents by providing dedicated browsers and visual imaging tools ranging from 2D-GIS to SecondLife and virtual QTR panoramas. For example, with the Google Earth visualization, any map in the collection can be seen perfectly mapped on the globe, or by using the Luna Browser one can create collections, save and download images, annotate maps or even create embeddable presentations.

All of the images in the collection have been published online at full resolution and are available to download at different quality levels under a Creative Commons License for non-commercial uses.

This is truly a spectacular collection with marvellous maps and atlases enriched by complementary data, visualization tools and a formidable array of navigation devices.

Possibly the best online curated collection I have seen so far.

Must-see. 10/10

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC] | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby?

What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’.

These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

iSee Augmented Reality Experiences

iSee Augmented Reality Experiences | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

iSee provide Augmented Reality solutions for organisations looking to develop deeply engaging experiences

We describe ourselves as platform agnostic.  This enables us to produce the right solution to meet our client’s brief and ambition, rather than be constrained by the technology.  But our preference is to work on the more versatile platforms familiar in the gaming sector which enables us to create sophisticated and high quality content.

We are flexible in our approach to publishing AR content, either through:

‘white label’ client branded Apps AR publishing platforms Our own iSee AR app Or, as an AR content provider to other digital marketing teams.

The individual experience and expertise of our team has enabled us to specialise in content for media, entertainment, sport and publishing.  But it is also important to us to establish firm credentials in practical everyday applications of Augmented Reality so we are working on material for the ophthalmic, education and corporate sectors.

We continue to push the boundaries of AR content creation – our work shown at the Gadget Show Live, 2012 demonstrated real time video streaming from 3D animations with additional graphics and text overlaid – a first for Augmented Reality.

As We May Think: A 1945 Essay on Information Overload, “Curation,” and Open-Access Science | Brain Pickings

As We May Think: A 1945 Essay on Information Overload, “Curation,” and Open-Access Science | Brain Pickings | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

By Maria Popova

"Tim O’Reilly recently admonished that unless we embrace open access over copyright, we’ll never get science policy right. The sentiment, which I believe applies to more than science, reminded me of an eloquent 1945 essay by Vannevar Bush, then-director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, titled “As We May Think.”As the war, with its exploitation of science and technology, draws to a close, Bush turns a partly concerned, partly hopeful eye to where scientists will rediscover “objectives worthy of their best” and calls for “a new relationship between thinking man and the sum of our knowledge.

”Much of what Bush discusses presages present conversations about information overload, filtering, and our restless “FOMO” — fear of missing out, for anyone who did miss out on the mimetic catchphrase — amidst the incessant influx. Bush worries about the impossibility of ever completely catching up and the unfavorable signal-to-noise ratio:"

Biosynthesis of two dihydropyrrole-polyketides from a marine-derived Penicillium citrinum

Biosynthesis of two dihydropyrrole-polyketides from a marine-derived Penicillium citrinum | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Feeding experiments with 13C-labeled precursors were performed in order to establish the biosynthesis of two N-acylated dihydropyrroles, (8E)-1-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2-methyldec8-ene-1,3-dione (1) and 1-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2-methyldecane-1,3-dione (2), isolated from the cultures of a marine-derived Penicillium citrinum. The biosynthesis of both, 1 and 2, involves the incorporation of acetate, methionine and ornithine.
