Video - How To Create Infographics

Infographics are everywhere these days. I've shared a bunch of them on here over the last couple of years. When they are designed well they can provide a good way to interpret and talk about data.

Synthesis: A constructive debate

Synthesis: A constructive debate | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
Synthetic chemistry has long been used to prepare useful compounds — especially those that are hard to obtain from natural sources. But synthetic biology is coming of age as an alternative strategy. A biologist and two chemists debate the merits of their fields' synthetic prowess.

Secondary metabolites are ubiquitous in bacteria, but by definition, they are thought to be nonessential. Highly toxic secondary metabolites such as patellazoles have been isolated from marine tunicates, where their exceptional potency and abundance implies a role in chemical defense, but their biological source is unknown. Here, we describe the association of the tunicate Lissoclinum patella with a symbiotic α-proteobacterium, Candidatus Endolissoclinum faulkneri, and present chemical and biological evidence that the bacterium synthesizes patellazoles. We sequenced and assembled the complete Ca. E. faulkneri genome, directly from metagenomic DNA obtained from the tunicate, where it accounted for 0.6% of sequence data. We show that the large patellazoles biosynthetic pathway is maintained, whereas the remainder of the genome is undergoing extensive streamlining to eliminate unneeded genes. The preservation of this pathway in streamlined bacteria demonstrates that secondary metabolism is an essential component of the symbiotic interaction.

Kandenols A–E, Eudesmenes from an Endophytic Streptomyces sp. of the Mangrove Tree Kandelia candel

Five novel eudesmene-type sesquiterpenes, kandenols A–E (1–5), have been isolated from Streptomyces sp. HKI0595 derived from the mangrove plant Kandelia candel. Their structures were established through NMR and mass spectrometry, and absolute configurations were established by the Mosher method and comparison of CD spectra with α-rotunol and β-rotunol. The kandenols are reminiscent of various plant-derived eudesmenes, yet kandenols B and C are unusual because of their hydroperoxide moieties. Kandenol E is the first bacterial agarofuran, which belongs to an important group of antibiotics. Whereas the kandenols display no cytotoxicity against 12 human cell lines, weak to moderate antimicrobial activities were detected against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Mycobacterium vaccae IMET 10670.

Search Engines, Boolean Logic and Education: What’s important for educators to know? | PLML - The Public Learning Media Laboratory

This essay explores search engines’ technological advancements to present recommendations for related instruction. It begins by introducing basic and advanced Boolean Logic concepts, and how Boolean logic is applied to search engines’ external and internal operation. It then presents the significant information challenges search engine providers face in delivering quality results to users, and explains related innovations. Based on these descriptions, the essay concludes by discussing educational and instructional implications for library educators who teach students how to perform online searches.

How the Flipped Classroom Turned Me into a Better Student - Getting Smart

How the Flipped Classroom Turned Me into a Better Student - Getting Smart | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

The biggest different in the flipped classroom was that I was able to learn at my own pace. When watching videos at home, if I didn’t understand something my teacher said, or wasn’t able to take notes fast enough, I had the ability to pause and rewind the video, and watch it again. Also, with class time now being spent doing work and solving problems, I could get help whenever I needed it. Rather than getting stuck on a problem at home and give up when it became too difficult, my teacher was able to show me what I was doing wrong, so I could figure out the answer and move on.

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
Education models are turning inside out. First came the concept of the 'flipped classroom' in schools: pupils completing course material ahead of lessons to free up time with their teachers and apply the knowledge they have just learned. Now a related philosophy is developing in higher education. Can we also flip academics – or even academia itself?

Alex Bruton, associate professor in innovation and entrepreneurship at Mount Royal University in Canada, thinks so. The 'flipped academic', as he sees it, is an academic who informs first and publishes later, seeking usefulness as well as truth in their research and striving to publish only after having had an impact on students and society.

I love the idea of the flipped academic, "publish only after having had an impact on students and society."  Our current model allows so much stuff to be published that doesn't really have any impact on students or society.  It reminds me of the idea of action research.

UmeaMan's comment, December 11, 2012 8:15 PM
I love the flipped model and I try to introduce it into Chinese K-12 settings, to help headteachers and teachers to implement it.But I found that there are a lot obstacles: such as change courages of teachers, teachers'competencies to create online videos, students' self-regulation etc. Do you have any suggestions and advices? Thanx.
